A federal jury says Chicago law enforcement must pay $330,000 to a family after officers shot their dog during a home raid that turned up no illegal activity.
Thomas Russell, then 18, opened the door to his home in February 2009 to find police officers with their guns drawn. He asked if he could lock up his 9-year-old black labrador, named Lady, before letting the officers inside. The Chicago Tribune describes what happened next:
Police refused the request and came into the house, the lawsuit said. When Lady came loping around the corner with her tail wagging, Officer Richard Antonsen shot the dog, according to the suit, which alleged excessive force, false arrest and illegal seizure for taking the dog's life.
The cops handcuffed Russell and his 16-year-old brother, and eventually charged Russell with obstructing their operation. He was found not guilty. According to NBC, the jury awarded $175,000 to Russell, $85,000 to his little brother, and $35,000 each to the brothers' parents. The officer who shot the dog owes $2,000 in damages, and his supervisor owes $1,000, according to NBC.
A law enforcement spokeswoman told the Tribune that the officers were protecting themselves.

Good. And yes, it's still not fucking enough.

The cop should feel a little more pain than $2,000. He should feel some real pain.

Seriously. 330k is too much to come from state coffers. Officers are not blameless ghosts that cannot bear responsibility.

It would be nice to see less money coming from the state in these suits and more from the perpetrator.

Think they should get more than that and a hell of a lot more from the officer who shot the dog. Hear about this happening far too often like it is a fucking game or something. Also think the officer should be fired without benefits. Discharging his weapon in front of minors like that at a dog that is no threat? Fired if it were up to me.

That's what I was thinking. Garnish 25% of the dickhead's wages for 10 years. Let him feel some pain. That and kick him off the force.

+1

We see this happening way too many times. I can think of at least 3 incidents in the bay area. Two summers ago an officer responded to a house alarm in the Oakland hills. The owner left the back garage door open so their 11 year old Lab could get out of the heat. I don't remember all the details but the officer shot and killed the dog when the dog came out to greet him after the cop went into the backyard.

There was another incident in the East Bay along the 80 corridor. The cop let the dog out of the owners fenced back yard and then shot the dog. Cops said they needed to go into the backyard to look for a bad guy they thought might be back there.

How was that kind of money awarded? I thought under the law, dogs are treated as property.

They should take his gun away, for a year or two, maybe he'd learn to appreciate it, and have a better respect for it's potential

It's Chicago.

Y'all should consider yourselves lucky that the guy that answered the door didn't wind up dead and in the river, too.

In Chicago at the moment. This is big news here.

I totally agree that the cops should pay out more and have more of a punishment.

they'll rape you for more than that for ripping a tag off a mattress

Our country, states and cities are broke and somebody believes a $300k pay out AFTER legal fees is a good thing? The American entitlement attitude has few peers.:rolleyes

What I'd really want is have 15 minutes alone with the cop who shot my dog.

And a crowbar.

When was the last time you beat somebody to death with a crow bar? Is it something you are experienced in or are you just jackin' off?

I totally feel entitled, entitled to my rights that are in the constitution. In this case, the 4th one.

How do you jack off with a crowbar? :twofinger
