CHP moto accident on Lakeville hwy

Hey Rel, I didn't know about this when I was driving back from Sears Point but had wondered why a section of Lakeville Hwy had been shutdown.

We had about 15 CHP moto officers join us at the 3J's day and wonder if he was there before this happened.

I really hope he pulls through!

Any updates on the Moto Officer's condition?

I asked an officer who pulled me over once about that, he said something along the lines of
1: It's tradition and uniform, it's what all officers wear.
2: Something to do with looking open and familiar and approachable (he was mostly taking about the open faced helmet) as a public servant

At cone day, Eddie said it was because it just gets damn hot in a suit and they ride all day long and have to do sneaker-cop stuff too

European moto cops manage to wear gear.

Ghey. Liberace ghey.

And that poor ST1100. Someone please shoot it and put it out of its misery. :(

edit: I wasn't able to see GAJ's second pic when it was linked from his post, but I could see it when I pasted the URL into a fresh browser session. I've attached it to this post. It brings to mind the "green police" from the Audi Superbowl ad. :barf

Yea, it's pretty fugly. However, if I was a moto cop, I'd welcome all the garish things one could do to a bike in the interest of safety. It's a tool, and anything that tool can do to help me get home safely at the end of each day is welcome. Methinks that if you were a motocop, you'd welcome that as well.

I have been trying for years to get our department to change our motor gear. I even know older motor officers who don't think its a good idea. I always hear this nonsense about the traditional police uniform and helmet.

What it comes down to ultimately is money. Most departments will spend the money on a basic helmet and boots for the officer. We have to buy the silly tight pants and such.

The full face flip up helmet usually costs around $200 bucks more than our standard Shoei. Because of this....the department doesn't want to pay. Motor gear...cordura pants, riding boots, jacket....all decent gear, not the crap that breaks down after 2 months, costs around $1200. So, paying $300-$500 is usually a sticking point for the department. I have offered to buy my own gear...then I get the "well, you will look different and people will not identify you as a cop" argument, although I was have patches, a badge, and "POLICE" marked all over the uniform...not to mention the bike itself.

I will continue this fight, but its a losing battle with the departments who are run by guys who are so stuck in tradition they cant see their nose in front of their own face.

What about the cost of the medical bills, and having to find replacements for officers that might otherwise still be hale and working??

I daresay the bike itself costs less than a Crown Vic up front, but some of the difference has to go to gear, it's only common sense.

It is quite interesting that it's ONLY this country where moto police have this gear problem.

Any word on this officer's condition? Is he out of the woods yet?

No new news as of now. Still in the hospital with major injuries.

Sending healing vibes his way. Hope he heals up well and fast... like, Ozymandias fast. Hospitals blow. :(

We put a proposal for it and just got the final approval from the Chief. Just waiting on the formal orders to be written and its textile gear for daily use, boots and breeches for formal wear. :thumbup

Awesome! Congratulations!

Cool. I hope this becomes a media story and the chief et al. get kudos for it.

Yeah, however they don't worry as must standing out like a neon target because firearms are outlawed for the general public.

So you guys are riding around in short sleeve shirts and slacks for the concealment value?
