We are well into the process of updating the current instructors of the California Motorcyclist Safety Program to the new curriculum. Our next goal is to add to the current instructor pool with new instructors. Many training sites were already short handed due to a lack of new instructor trainings prior to this conversion. If you think you might enjoy teaching people how to ride motorcycles many sites could use your help.

Teaching can be very rewarding for both the instructor and the students. There are opportunities all over the region and the state. Many sites will be offering not only the basic learn to ride classes (MTC) but also intermediate and advanced classes. If this is something you are interested in knowing more about we are currently scheduling the 7 day trainings in different locations around the region and the state.

Please take a moment to visit a local training site. Watch a class, talk to current instructors, site administrators and see if this might be right for you. If it is find a site sponser and get signed up today for a new instructor training session. I will be looking forward to meeting and working with you through the process.

If you have any inkling of being an instructor I would highly recommend you go for it. Having been an instructor for almost 10 years this new material is refreshing.

I have wanted to do this for a while. Hopefully I can find somewhere to take me on.

Hmmm. will send pm.

this is the program that Lee Park took over, if I recall correctly?

I'm with Roadstergal and hoping for some NorCal dates in March/April.

(for retraining, that is)

Is there a link to said training sites? Any classes in SoCal?

Yes, in So Cal we currently have a 7 day training set up for Camp Pendelton. Not sure about a link as you have to register through a provider.

Add me to the two people that have already asked for more retraining dates (3 day) in NorCal.

Can we pick the site or at least be able to see what sites need instructors?

Last I knew the cost of this course was rather prohibitive for some of us. Is there more information on the course costs that can be found elsewhere? Links?

Nevermind, post below this had links that answered that question, assuming that information is accurate. About 1/2 of what I was told a few months ago.

You can work for any site you wish and more than one if you wish. That will depend on the needs of the sites you want to work for.

Cost of the seven day instructor training is $395.

The first ones we have scheduled are 7 consecutive days. In the future we may have some that are two long weekends but that is harder since the site owners have to again be out if business when we are running class

So, in order to become a certified instructor, one must complete the 7 days (60 hours) of training AND shadow a current range instructor? If yes, about how long does one have to shadow? Also, are instructors paid, or volunteer? If paid, what's the general range. PM if you'd rather not post publicly.

Nothing to hide,

Yes, you first have to take the class as a student, this is so that you are familiar with the class, content, how it is delivered and what is in the class. Candidates must shadow two classes, Watch and learn how the instructors run the class, place cones, time etc. Then attend the 7 days (This can be in the current format of 7 consecutive days or in the future we will be doing some that are two consecutive long weekends) The final two days of the seven is the Candidates teaching and actual class of real students.

Instructors are paid and the rate varies by site and how much you do (I was getting $25 hourly at the sites I taught for and doing all the class). Most pay hourly and the program is just over 15 hours total, there is classroom time and of course Riding (Range) time. Some instructors will work both, some just do the riding portion depending on the needs of the site. Some sites do double ranges, one group morning, one group afternoon, so you could teach a lot if you wanted to.

You will learn a lot more by taking the class, shadowing classes and talking to the site owners, administrators and Instructors at the sites you are interested in working at.

Hope this all helps.

David
