CMSP MTC Instructors needed

Nothing to hide,

Yes, you first have to take the class as a student, this is so that you are familiar with the class, content, how it is delivered and what is in the class. Candidates must shadow two classes, Watch and learn how the instructors run the class, place cones, time etc. Then attend the 7 days (This can be in the current format of 7 consecutive days or in the future we will be doing some that are two consecutive long weekends) The final two days of the seven is the Candidates teaching and actual class of real students.

Instructors are paid and the rate varies by site and how much you do (I was getting $25 hourly at the sites I taught for and doing all the class). Most pay hourly and the program is just over 15 hours total, there is classroom time and of course Riding (Range) time. Some instructors will work both, some just do the riding portion depending on the needs of the site. Some sites do double ranges, one group morning, one group afternoon, so you could teach a lot if you wanted to.

You will learn a lot more by taking the class, shadowing classes and talking to the site owners, administrators and Instructors at the sites you are interested in working at.

Hope this all helps.

David

Very much! Thank you, David. :thumbup

Need to own and ride a motorcycle. Have your license for over two years. Like to teach and have time to invest.

I have a decade's worth of riding experience with no ticket/accidents that ended about 3 weeks ago (because I sold the bikes), so technically I'm not qualified, but may still be interested.

What sort of commitment are we talking about? Are we married to one site only?

You need a sponser to get set up but I know several instructors who work for more than one site. You can work as much or as little as the sites you work for will permit. There us a five class over two year period minimum to stay certified

I think it's a 6 class minimum. The site (http://cmsp.msi5.com/our_team.php) requirements says this, but maybe there's some flexibility. :dunno

The following minimum qualifications must be met to be considered:
  • Possess a high school diploma or a G.E.D.
  • Own a street-legal motorcycle and operate it on a regular basis.
  • Licensed driver for 5 years and have a current motorcycle endorsement.
  • Agree to abide by CMSP Instructor Standards.
  • Able to attend the Instructor Training (IT).
  • Able to complete the Yearly Mandatory Online Update.
  • Available to teach a minimum of 6 courses over two years.

Whats the best way to find a sponsor? Just take a class and talk to the instructor who becomes your sponsor? thx

Look up the sites that you would want to work for and just call them. I found one pretty easily. They will usually let you go through the class for free and then you have to come to a couple range days to shadow them. I already got signed up for the instructor course and will be doing my class and shadow time in the next couple weeks.

Sweet. Some sites will do that. I cannot speak on behalf of the sites but I am glad they are working with you.

I know Santa Rosa is also looking for new instructors.

As I have the P&P in front of me, to participate in an instructor training a candidate must:

Complete the class as a student

Attend classes to observe instructors working both classroom and range

Complete the 60 hour training that includes completing a riding proficiency test and a written test. It also includes teaching a live class as the final two days of training.

To keep your instructor status instructors must conduct at least 5 classes in a two year period. Instructors must also attend a Professional development workshop once a year and also work to improve your riding and teaching abilities by taking classes for continuous improvement.

Well I know the training sites around the bay area (They are all privately owned) are still looking for more instructors. I had an e-mail from one site yesterday and they have over 50 dates that they need additional instructors to fill. So if you are on the fence about teaching, The sites do need people, there is work as there seems to be a lot of people wanting to take the class to either get trained or try to get a license. (Of course anyone under 21 has no choice)

I actually started teaching over 20 years ago, and have enjoyed it so much that even though I always had a full time job, I have taught all types of stuff even traveling all over the country. It has always been a lot of fun and I have meet some really cool folks along the way.

I am humbled to be a part of this change here in California. The instructors I have meet and gotten to know so far have been amazing.

I'm very interested in getting into teaching again, just concerned that I won't be able to give up the time required in order to become certified. I don't even have enough vacation time to take the week off from work.

I left a VM with my local (Alameda) site this morning. What's the order of operations?

1.) Get sponsored
2.) Take current class
3.) Take Instructor Training
4.) Shadow classes

Does the above have to be done in order?

Is the site that emailed you reaching out to its MSF-certified coaches? I know my previous site has not given me much at all, just a link to the paperwork.

It's disappointing - I went into coaching in order to give back to the community a bit, and now I'd have to get hotels and take vacation days from work and lay out several hundred dollars on top in order to get re-trained in the new curriculum - and with no support from my site. It's just a lot of disincentive.

Depends on your site, We had three day trainings at several locations so most people did not have to travel, Some sites helped with the cost (Not all, you would have had to work it out with your site) Some determined they are paying instructors so the cost to get trained is up to the instructor since they can work at multiple sites. Now there is only one more three day training before we are done with those.

You have to shadow and take the class both before taking the instructor class.

We are also doing some of the trainings on two long weekends so people have less time off, but that depends on the availability of locations.
