Small print does not apply in CA. Why don't we pay people a fair wage? Tip allow some people to be shits, raise you price to pay fair.

I am always leave a good tip (so long as the service is good)

My girlfriend used to be a waitress, and through her I learned that she would get taxed a percentage based on the total cost of her meals. So if her tables served that night spent $100 in food, she would get taxed a certain percentage. It would be assumed the customer tipped her the right percentage for the price of their meal. It really sucked because If a customer spend $50 and didnt leave her a tip, she would still get taxed for the "invisible" tip... so it ended up coming out of her hourly wages... since I found that out, I always tip the expected amount... and in case of great service, leave a pretty decent tip...

there was one waiter who remembered our routine order after only serving us twice, and was really, reallllly nice and friendly/helpful... We started requesting him every time we went to that spot and would always leave a $10-$15 tip for him (even when our meals were only $20-$25...

there is a reason I hav never been a waiter... nor would I want to be. People step all over them.

This applies to delivery guys as well. I used to deliver pizzas and some people just flat out refuse to tip the delivery guy for some reason. I guess they think he doesn't do as much as a waiter/waitress does because he's not waiting on you hand and foot...no....he just brought you your hot food to your door when you didn't want to go out. Using his time, gas, insurance and maintenance money to bring it to you.
And don't forget taking the risk of getting robbed at every stop just because he doesn't know who might be waiting for him when he gets there....that's a fun one.

$9 an hour for serving me food. You've already won not flipping burgers.

Want more money get a better job.

Myself and half my family, including my mother, were servers. It's an easy and low stress job. It's easier than working at any fast food restaurant and you meet much better people.

Tipping is not a requirement. It's only if you really like the person and they created an inspiring moment in your day. Too many people see it as an expectation just for putting food or drinks in front of your face.

Gee that's funny, I worked at McDonald's and real restaurants in my young days and I damn sure don't remember McDonald's being harder than being a real waiter. If you don't want to tip, you can march your happy ass back to the kitchen and order your own damn food. Don't forget to go back there to get anything else you need and make sure to refill your own drinks.

so we pay them to do all that... and the restaurant pays them for??

The problem with this statement is the fact that many servers are paid a sub-minimum wage based on the EXPECTATION that their income will be supplemented by tips.

Yes, you should make a salary and pension like a cop for that service. :laughing

Total bullshit! (unless the service is really bad) Most servers depend on tips as part of their income. If your too cheap to leave a tip, your too cheap to go out! :thumbdown

Most servers should act like it then. Good service = good tip. Bad service = bad tip. I start at around 15%. It goes up if service is good, down if service is bad. I don't ask for much, just good solid basics.

- Bring me silverware and a menu if you come to take my order and the host/hostess didn't give me anything.
- Bring me water right off the bat when you come to ask what I want to drink. I hate being thirsty and you wait to bring the water out until I already have the drink I ordered. Maybe it's a tactic to get me to order something I have to pay for, but if I'm thirsty and have to wait another 20 minutes for something to drink I'm not gonna be enjoying it.
- Extra plates for bread/butter/appetizers if you can see there's more than 1 person at the table
- Check on me once in a while. You don't have to hover but if I go 45 minutes without seeing you or being able to flag you down for something, you fucked up. Especially when there's a group of us ready and waiting to go and you aren't even bringing more drinks, so we're all just waiting for checks. Now you're annoying us AND not clearing a table that could bring in more customers and tips for you.

I expect these at the bare minimum whether I'm at IHOP or the Ritz. Most of the time it's a non-issue and I get these. Sometimes I don't, and the tip reflects that.

Things that make your tip go up after nailing all of the above: phrasing heh
- Keeping waters topped off and drinks refilled in a timely manner.
- Timely service with food, appetizers, bread, bringing the check, etc.
- Be friendly. Crack a joke, join the conversation, make small talk if you're not slammed. Smile, act like you enjoy your job even if you're having a shitty day. Laugh it off if you're not. Nobody wants Debbie Downer as a waiter/waitress.

There's plenty more that's highly subjective and situational that can make a tip go up or down, but those are some of my basic expectations when I go out to eat. I've been known to tip 30%+ on a bill, and I've been known to walk out without paying. It all depends on the server.

I tip anywhere between 15 and 25%. 15% if the food or service is bad. 20% at expensive restaurants because it is fucking expensive, duh. 25% if food and or service is exceptional or if I know the server like at a place I frequent.
My wife , an ex-server pounded this into my head many years ago. The benefit of being generous is the smile and great service if you ever return. :twofinger

what about takeout? i hate when i pay for takeout and there is that pretentious "tip" section on the receipt. all the waiter did was pick up my food, carry it 5 feet and push some buttons on a register. that doesnt deserve a tip.

when it comes to delivery, i tip 30%. when it comes to a sit down meal, i usually just double the tax. take out, i give them zero.

15% should be for just average service and 0-10% should be used for bad service. And tip more just because it's expensive?? F that! Expensive places need to perform the same (relatively) as the dives.
