I have been issued a Concealed Carry Permit in other states, and I have always heard that it is next to impossible (if even possible) to get one in CA. Is this true?

So....I guess it depends...

Just joined CACCW's forum so I can do some more research. I live in Sacramento, so I am hoping it is easier here than in the bay area.

Good cause statement:

"My vstrom is too slow to outrun anyone so I might need to shoot it out".

:rofl:ride:p

The northern most CA counties have Shall Issue sheriffs. Any major metropolitan area with the exception of Sacramento are going to use your CCW application to wipe their ass with.

My quick research tonight has led me to the conclusion that the Sheriff of Sacramento County does not issues CCW's (a couple of dozen so far, but I am sure those were close friends, relatives, contributors, etc).

Ugh!

I was under the impression that since they lost a lawsuit, Sac has been virtually shall issue. They're understaffed, though, so there's a long backlog.

What Junkie said. Sacramento you're good to go with essentially personal self defense as your good cause, maybe with a minor tweak such as "I'm ex military/law enforcement/work in healthcare/am a small female/drive through X neighborhood on my route home". Be polite, professional, and it doesn't hurt to let them know you shoot regularly and follow all laws and don't have so much as a traffic ticket etc. Hopefully you don't have a criminal record or anything else, but depending on the circumstances even that may not preclude you from obtaining your permit. Good luck.

Oh, and Calguns will likely be more help than CACCW.

Check CalGuns. They are the definitive resource.

And of anywhere in CA, I've heard you actually stand a chance in Sac.

Sacramento is shall issue basically. Just be sure to give a basic just cause letter. I used a simple one that stated I wanted to protect myself and my family. The hardest part was getting the initial appointment. Check the Sac Sheriff web site daily to schedule your initial appointment. Once you have that everything else is easy.

Depends on where you live. In CA it is up to the County jurisdiction of Law Enforcement to approve your application. In many rural counties it is relatively easy to obtain one. In some like Marin and San Francisco, it is simply not possible as the official that issued the permit would be stampeded by the cattle in their district for such a transgression. Living in areas like Inyo, Modoc and Humboldt make it pretty easy to get away with a carry permit good for the whole state, but you have to live pretty far from the major population centers as San Francisco, Sonoma, Alameda, San Diego, Santa Clara and Los Angeles counties are all no go areas, which covers all the major population centers in the state. Sacramento is the exception and they have been known to issue in Sac sometimes, but it is not as common as out in Eldorado or Tehama. One ray of hope is San Mateo county, where you can sometimes get issued if you have a few connections.

CoCo county a tough bet? I worry if I put down I work in education that would be a guaranteed no.

Even in Lassen Co (NE Cali) where it is rural and fairly conservative it was very difficult to get a CCW. It is commonly known that each application is presented to all of the deputies. If anyone of them knew you and did not like you, it was denied. If they did not know you at all, denied. If you had so much as a traffic ticket, denied.
I had a very good reason to carry. Part of my job required I transport "controlled" substances regularly. But I worked with the new husband of one of the deputy's ex wife. Denied. I was even friends with two other S.O. employees.

Too subjective.
