Anyone here know the disposition of the person who ran Craig down?

From reading previous posts and news reports it seems the guy was 100% at fault when he mowed down a rider with his SUV. It seems like a clear case of vehiclular homicide/manslaughter, doesn't it? This is one of those nightmare traffic scenarios we all fear, where no amount of defensive riding can save us from some bastard.

Did the Oakland cops just do one of those "he's suffered enough" blowoffs? Did they know the killer? What is the deal? I have been following the news since the death of Craig and have seen zero followups online or in the Oakland paper. It's nice that his friends did the Temple of Forgiveness thing at Burning Man, but how about the Temple of Justice?

I am just curious, since this seems a perfect case to make an example of so maybe some stupid f@#$ on the cell phone in his/her huge vehicle may think twice at least once in their selfish lives.

Just a little rant.

please search forums for "hightower'. lots of posts from last year and links..

Active duty Coast Guard, part of Homeland Security. As such, the public at large doesn't have a need to know who it was.

Craig's immediate family probably got all the information they were entitled to, and its a done deal.

That's really not good enough, if you ask me. Which you didn't. so carry on.

..

You sure? Cause you seem to be pissed off in general. Someone give this guy a hug and a joint.

In a related news y'all should remember Mr. Janklow. There is no Justice for motorcyclist.

Background article:

"...When South Dakota Congressman and former South Dakota governor Bill Janklow decided to drive 20 mph over the speed limit, he probably didn't expect to kill someone.

But that's what happened. Police reports say Janklow was going 75 mph in a 55-mph zone and that he ran a stop sign without slowing at the intersection where the accident occurred. Scott, who had no stop sign limiting him, struck the congressman's speeding Cadillac on its left side, just behind the driver's door. He was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene. Janklow suffered some head injuries himself and a hand injury. Reports say that neither driver tested positive for alcohol or drugs.

Janklow has an extensive history of speeding, has even referred to it in speeches, and has obtained numerous tickets for it. He has never been jailed or had his license suspended. At the scene, he said he swerved to avoid another car, but no such vehicle was seen by witnesses and both vehicles were in their lanes. He has previously told that same story when he got in trouble on the road..."

Update:

"...Janklow was convicted of second-degree manslaughter but was sentenced to only 100 days incarceration, paid just $11,000 in fines and fees, and lost his law license and seat in Congress. He was sentenced to three years probation and loss of driving privileges. It was later ruled that he was acting in an official capacity when he ran the stop sign and as a result any liability fell to the U.S. government and not him personally. As a result, Randy Scott's family could not bring suit against him..."

It is truly sad that a motorcyclist lost their life, but saying that the driver "ran Craig down" or "mowed him down" isn't painting an accurate picture of the event. I don't remember reading that it had anything to do with a cell phone either.

I'm with you - especially if it gets me a joint and a hug.

Seriously, I was wondering the same thing as the OP, and it wasn't clear to me from the original thread that was linked here that there had been a legal resolution to Craig's death. The OP asked a perfectly legitimate question. I was not aware that working for Homeland Security made one immune from prosecution.

I don't recall anyone saying "immune from prosecution". And, there's no evidence that he wasn't prosecuted. Just that the name of the other driver is not public record. The following legal processes probably fall into that non-public-record catagory as well.

It seems I drew the wrong inference, though making it private (non-public) still seems odd to me.

Don't get me wrong, I think it should be handled as any other vehicle manslaughter incident. But when Homeland Security gets mentioned, it appears some things can be buried with impunity.
