craigslist charging $5 for private party motorcycle ads

I don't believe I've ever reposted an ad. I generally price stuff to sell quick so I can cut down on time and the retards.

No.

I find those who bump their ad annoying and appear desperate. :laughing

I guess for those of us who don't suffer image issues and other inferiority-complex related problems, we find that bumping to the top gains immediate emails, texts and phone calls from prospective buyers, because, as it turns out, being posting number 796 of 1032 doesn't seem to get many eyeballs.

you seem awfully defensive for someone that isn't suffering some kind of complex.

Just to put this into perspective:

A gallon of gas in the bay area is $4.

A cup of coffee at Alice's is $3.25.

To post a CL ad to sell your used vehicle in order to share with millions for $5 on a site that is completely ad-free and user free is ABSURD?

:rofl:party

Can you please quote who stated it is "ABSURD"?

You can make a sign on a piece of card board and stand at the corner of the street to post your motorcycle for sale ads. It is free for you to do.

You might find out that card board and pen cost money too.

Hosting your motorcycle pictures and serving your for sale page to visitors cost money too.

$5 per ad is a totally fair service.

Where did I state it is not fair? I stated the price is up and quality is down.

I have sold 8 bikes in the past 4 years on CL. I have always just sold my bikes compared to others on CL. If some one is looking for a specific bike and I have that bike then mine is going to get consideration as the ad is complete, the description is solid and it is priced right. I also dont bother trying to sell a bike without a title in hand. It can be done but less people are willing to make this transaction

I think bumping your ad to the top does help IF the buyer is not looking for a specific bike. This is also where tags come in to play in the ad

When I am buying a bike I generally click on search title only. I am going to look at EVERY bike that is the model I want and find the best deal within the area I am willing to drive. I dont care if it is at the top or bottom I am gonna look at them all.

Even the Ducati I sold was gone in 6 weeks. I have sold bikes in 3 days up to 6 weeks. I just cant see a bike being for sale more than 8 weeks unless it is priced too high or the ad was a horrible ad. Maybe posting in a wet winter season is not a great idea also

I think the $5 fee should help out and eliminate some of the fake ads, some of the duplicate ads and the people who are selling at an unreasonable price. I guess I will find out when I sell th next bike here in a few months

When I sold my VFR last summer, one of the interested buyers was looking at either my VFR or a Shadow. He was focused on a price range more than anything, and people searching that way get a TON of noise because there is no way to at least separate out street from off-road, registered from not registered, etc.

Also, a lot of people are not so good with various different search operands (I use tons of them to take search results down by ~75%) so the user experience will vary greatly from one user to the next.

With posts expiring every 7 days, as the free ones do, you don't realize that craigslist was forcing you to bump your post. So you got the benefits of the bump whether you were aware of it or not. I just happened to notice that the bump would also increase the number responses, timing the bump also tends to help (Thursday evening gives Thursday and Friday bump, because automated search emails sent Friday morning, and people want to look at the bike on the weekend).

You've been selling hundreds of items for the past 17 years for free.
CL now wants to charge you and you're belly aching because of this.
Sorry if CL gets to make the rules.
They're not some gov't entity that's here to serve the people.

That's nice.

Now go pretend to play political guru in whatever thread it is that their talking politics.

Your strawman won't work here.

I'm fine with paying $5 to list a motorcycle for sale on craigslist. I use to have to pay before craigslist.... in newspapers and trader mags.

There are still other places to list your stuff for sale for free, but maybe they aren't as effective as craigslist and the $5 is really worth the fee to sell your bike. You are after all enjoying an economic gain for a service provided. :dunno

I see this isn't a place for any sort of discussion that has even a second layer of consideration.

My claim: craigslist has increased prices and reduced quality.

BARF response: we love craigslist no matter what they do how come you hate them with every fiber of your being?

I understand the point of this thread is not about then $5 you have to pay but rather the ease of selling your bike the $5 fee had created.

Only time will tell if it has made it easier or more difficult. Let's give it some time.

Ultimately I sell 2 bikes a year and I am not concerned. The bike will sell provided it is priced correctly at market value with a clean title in hand along with a good ad

Let us know how your experience goes. Anyone selling a motorcycle on CL should chime in also.

I search CL a lot for motorcycles and you know what? The bikes that are priced good sell.... the other bikes I laugh at and wonder who buys these bikes? A lot of those ads stick around for a long time and I can only wonder if the seller gave up or a lazy buyer came along

I just learned that craigslist is charging $5 for private party motorcycle ads.

While I don't mind paying when I sell the bike through an outlet, such as BARF, I don't like paying to just place an ad.

Additionally, I cannot repost without paying for a second ad, and my experience is that I have to move an ad to the top to get anyone to ever find anything. Of the bikes and myriad other items I've sold on craigslist over the past two decades, they nearly all sell shortly after the second or third time I've bumped them to the top.

To summarize, craigslist is charging for a previously free service that is now less effective than it was before.

I'm in the wrong profession.

This was your original post OP.

"While I don't mind paying when I sell the bike through an outlet, such as BARF, I don't like paying to just place an ad.

I've sold 5 vehicles on CL, some having to pay, others not for that ad when it was that time period. All of my vehicles sold in less than a week. If you have to constantly "bump" your post to get views, there's something wrong in either your price. ad description or you just have a vehicle that is not in demand (like a Hyosung).

:thumbup I think some folks just disagree that the quality of service has decreased or that "bumping" an ad is more effective than a well written ad priced correctly. Speaking for myself, I understand what you are saying, just disagree.
