Current dash cam setup for your cage?

This is the one I use. Rexing V1LG

Bought the optional hardwire kit running to the fusebox under the dash. Camera runs 24/7, and with a 64GB card I have about 2.5 days worth of footage in store.

I’m also interested in the hardwire kit for my Rexing but I have to ask, how many days of 24/7 recording do you get until your car battery dies?

I'd like a smaller lens only camera with the DVR connected to it in the glovebox. No screen where the camera is. Small and discreet.

This. Having a nice dash camera in your vehicle is just asking for trouble.

Been contemplating on getting one on the cage too...

Do your research. If you can't make out the license plate in all weather conditions and lighting, don't waste your money.

I have a Thinware. Not sure the model, but it works great. Some insurance companies will give you a discount for certain models too. Again, do your research.

I dunno. Longest I’ve ever gone without starting my truck was 4 days and it started fine. Plus I have all kinds of crap running to that battery (off-road lights, CB radio, aux 12v outlet, etc).

How long does the battery last?
How long can you shoot with whatever size card you're using?
What software are you using to get from camera to youtube?

I have an old gopro from back in 2010 which I only used a few times. I seem to recall it being a pita to get uploaded to youtube. Might be easier by now.

about an hour+, but can be wired
depends on card size but they do offer loop recording
they now have a mobile app which really simplifies it

about 1.75 hours, i hook it up to my cigarette port charger deal with a cable tho while it's in the truck. Will run indefinitely like that, i actually don't even keep the battery in it.

depends on settings, 64 gig card, 4k30fps, 2 hours 8 minutes i believe
There's a loop feature so you can film forever*

whatever the hell gopro provides for software, this is actually my first upload to youtube from the device. I first pull the file off the card then upload to youtube. Maybe a way to do it directly, no clue. The read speed on UHS 1 is painfully slow and afaik all that gopro supports, so i pull the SD card (get a fast one, UHS 2) and use a micro SD to USB adapter. After plugging in the USB adapter i open the gopro software and i have it set up to automatically pull the videos to a folder of my choosing and then deletes everything on the card. Pretty seamless. Then i open youtube and pick out what i want to upload and go through that.

*the loop sucks, basically you can set your videos to loop at certain intervals or max out the card. The reason it sucks is once you turn off your gopro it saves whatever it is you've been recording.

Example. Lets say my card has 2 hours worth of recording space. I set loop to max and record for 3 hours. At the 2 hour mark it loops and records over half of the first 2 hours. I now turn my gopro off and it saves the last 2 hours on the card.

I turn my gopro back on and want to film but my SD card is full so i either cant or i need to delete what's on the card.

Example 2

Card has 2 hours worth of recording space and i set my loop interval to 1 hour. I record for 3 hours again and turn off my go pro. It now looped twice and saves that final hour of filming to the card. My card is now half full and I can turn my gopro on and film again for however long i want and it'll save that last hour of time.

My card is now full and i'll need to delete at least 1 of the 2 videos to film again.

Biggest draw back of using it as a dash cam by far

So maybe gopro isn't the best choice for dash cam.

I might have been doing it wrong but back in the day I couldn't upload the gopro file from SD card directly to YouTube. The file format was too large so you had to reduce it in some other free video editing software I found online.
It seemed more trouble than I was willing to deal with.

It records in multiple files. If you film for an hour it'll save that into 8 files 8 minutes each. Not real numbers obviously but you get the idea.

Like i said, if you ONLY want a dash cam a gopro is probably not the best option. If you want a gopro AND a dash cam it does double duty pretty good.

Make sure whatever you get it films in 1080 at a minimum. That 720 rear somebody else listed might as well just come with the front camera as far as im concerned.

I might get one of the dash cams listed in one of the links here just for dash cam duty so I can just leave it in the car. And get a gopro for bike stuff.
I assume you can splice together those 8 minute clips?
There's likely good deals on the Hero 5 now that the 6 is out. Hoping I can get the dash cam and gopro for $400 total.

Yes

Oh an you can delete the videos on the device, not like you have to pull the card or plug the gopro into a computer to do so. It's really not hard and pretty quick, just annoying.

I’ve always seen this as just another marketing angle to sell people cameras. I’d guess the odds of this ever being cost effective are less than being struck by lightning.

I’ve had eye witnesses and store shipping logs to identify a hit and run delivery driver...Insurance didn’t think the 3K claim was worth pursuing and neither did the cops so I ate the deductible. More recently our home cameras caught video of our neighbor’s burglary. No plates (not my house), but another jurisdiction actually caught the guy and called asking for the footage because SJPD (who I gave to to) wouldn’t even bother to share a copy.
