Daytime TV: predatory advertising on old people?

Good idea, but I meet more and more people that absolutely despise their parents (I didn't, but then again, they were pretty normal, no abuse or anything else). There seems to be a lot of elderly that are absolutely alone.
We invited my 80yr old pop to a simple dinner last night so he could enjoy his grandchildren.

He kicked my oldest boy's ass in ping pong then told us all about how he's gonna fly his Beechcraft Bonanza up to Ashland OR today.

Not all old guys are victims, and I hope like hell I've got half the huevos rancheros he does if I make it to 80.:thumbup

You are completely contradicting yourself. I want to know where you stand. Is it ok for people to try and take advantage of the elderly or not?

Nope. As I said, don't stereotype being elderly with being gullible. My gramps was not gullible, he was having mental problems. Perhaps I should have not even brought that up since it's not related to advertising, my bad. Otoh it is a good example of how we should protect elderly parents by paying close attention to their mental faculties as they age.

Adverts that advertise products people may or may not want is not taking advantage of anything. If you don't want it, don't buy it. Do you need someone else to tell you what you want? NO.

The advert should certainly be honest about what the product or service offers. If not, it's not called predatory it's called false advertising.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like you are saying you are perfectly ok with television ads that target old people (which is fine). But it also sounds like you are saying that old people that may be mentally deficient shouldn't have protection from these activities. I guess my point is that your grandfather (or anybody senile or with dementia) shouldn't have ads directed at them designed to take money from their gullibility. Sure, many old people are very smart and have full mental capacities. Many do not. I believe their should be some protection for these people.

The BBC is funded entirely through a license fee; there's no advertising at all, which means there are no advertisements in or between shows, and no advertisers to appease or pander to in their reporting and programming.
It's dirty pinko socialism, but it's awesome. :teeth
