Rod, This looks like a great trip on a fantastic route. I am wondering how much travel there is on dirt roads. I know there is about 19 miles in the Carrizo Plains NM but is there more? Would it be disruptive for an individual rider to bypass the dirt portions? Thanks, John
Rod,
I'll be at WARPED VIII. How do I link up with you guys for Death Valley?
If feasible count me in.
I'd love to join your ride but don't want to ride back by myself.
Anybody doing the 1-day trip?
Cool! Just mosey on over to Beatty on the 15th, we'll be arriving that afternoon. Keep an eye on this thread for the hotel selection; I'll announce one this week.
My vote would be for the stage coach or gregs suggestion. A little night entertainment would be a good thing. Also think a little planing is order as we get closer to the ride date, no point in everyone bringing a stove and gas for camping when one could bring gas and another the burner for example, who's bringing a tent? Willing to share? or are we all on our own, I think with a little planning we could all cut down on the amount of stuff we need to carry and possibly save someone buying something they don't need. Or if everyone just whants to to be solo that works to, I have have my bike camping gear so I'm good to go!!![]()
Tentative plan
April 14: From WARPED VIII to Death Valley Refuel/Water break at Panamint Springs and Stovepipe Wells Village . Proposed Route: http://g.co/maps/vmdht Contingency stop: Beatty.
Route is good for ADV bikes: Hard slab and n00b skill level off pavement. Ride Sunrise to Sunset.
or
A shorter 284 mile R/T ride (5.25 hrs): Kernville (WARPED VIII) to Olancha Dunes http://www.duneguide.com/sand_dune_g...ncha_dunes.htm (See KTM Trail ride: http://www.photo2pixel.com/OD1.html ) to Paramint Springs for Refuel (Too bad we can't sample the brew and ride back). Hi Rod -
I vote for the same two as Greg - Burro or Stage Coach, they both seem fine.
FYI my current plan is to do Carrizo plains w/you guys and the first full day of DV, then I prbly gotta head back the following day...
And +1 on Tim's suggestion of some pre-ride planning to plan out the camping and try and share/leverage everyone's gear/skillz. For instance, I'm a pretty good cook/BBQr but don't have a small tent or campstove currently...I'd rather contribute food and my cooking skills and share gear with others then rush out and buy stuff if I don't have to.
I'm thinking of perhaps grilled flank steak or maybe Santa Maria style tri-tip with potato wedges and french bread, and a nice local cab or syrah to wash it down with......or chili
I wonder how my frozen homemade chowder would travel...

From their web site it doesn't look like the Stagecoach will have entertainment while we are there (Saturdays only), but I'll call and check.
I'm not sure yet, but, if I can, I'll try to do at least what Rod suggested for the 1 day trip to Hwy 25 & cross to Hwy 1 through Fort Hunter Liggett or anywhere. Just want to go back through Hwy 1. I 'll let you know at least 2 days before April 14th.
Sounds good. Please update when you know.
I've only been down hwy 1 that south once on a group ride to Bixby bridge. Somehow, I really like riding on hwy 1, it's a very nice road. I don't think I've ever been on 25 or visited those towns.
It looks like I'll be home alone for the spring break and wife is giving me permission for a day trip. I'm very excited !
.., but I'm kind of poor with this mapping things, so you might want to plan our route...
Don't worry, ever since smart phone + map app, I've not been very majorly lost yet
I'm also not afraid of asking for directions after 2 hrs of searching for routes.
