Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

He wanted to get "birthday party" shots as well. these were some of my favorite all night.

The Volcano

We worked for about 6 hours taking around 500 pictures. It was a great learning experience, and one that I really enjoyed. It was harder than I thought it would've been, but I still enjoyed the challenge of creating the right shot.

If I could do it again, I would've made some changes:
1) Shoot at night when the restaurant is busy. The extra people would've given the photos more action in the background.
2) Start earlier! I didn't know how much planning is needed when working with a business. Plan! Plan! Plan!
3) Make sure my batteries are charged! My parents took my camera to Oregon three days prior, and I got my camera back the night before. I uploaded their pics, and put the battery in the charger; but i guess it didn't charge. Everything worked out fine because I charged my battery while we were planning the shoot; but I quietly felt embarrassed.

Fedex truck bringing me an early present on Friday: my first prime L lens, Canon 300mm F4 non-IS in excellent condition. :cool Ian, weren't you using the IS version that you borrowed from your friend? I might let you borrow this one after I have a chance to play with it a little bit, just so you can compare the two. :teeth

Awesome! I don't think you'll be disappointed :) It's probably a lot lighter than the IS one.

I actually just got my first L series lens of my own! Woot! Desiree bought me the 70-200 F4, non-IS. It's tiny - barely bigger than the cheapie 70-300 $150 zoom I've basically given up on because the colors get all fucked up.

And it's about half the size and a third the weight of the 300 - which I've mostly been using for candids at events, and for that, it's kinda sucky - EVERYONE knows you're taking their picture with it, and you have to be in a large rooom to get far enough away anyway.

The range of the smaller lens is perfect, and the colors are the lovely smooth rendition that only L series (and the 85 F1.8) seem capable of reproducing, at least on a Canon.

Bokeh isn't that great, which suprised me, as the aperture blades create a near perfect circle - just seems a little harsh next to the 85 F1.8, even at similar aperture/focal length settings. Not bad, just not great. But great value for money :) Very happy with it :)

And yes, still got the 300mm F4 to test against yours Alex! Just lemme know when you want to do a back-to-back test :)

Flash has arrived in Virginia today... hopefully back by Christmas...

I've used the canon 70-200 f4 non is for motorsports a number of times, including using the 1.4 teleconverter. I've never had a problem with it, nice and light. Almost too light with the 1d body...

Good to know - one of my concerns is that without the IS, I'm going to struggle with action shots, but at F4 on a bright day, I'm hoping it won't be an issue - sounds like it won't be :)

How was it with the 1.4x? I'm tempted to get the Canon 2x - already have a Kenko 2x (the Canon 2x only works with some L lenses). The Kenko is fine for novelty value, but it's not that sharp and screws up the EXIF info.

For what it's worth, Joe (com3 from 4theriders, AFM photographer) used that 70-200mm f4 lens when he started out and had great results. Also, consensus seems to be that IS is not very helpful when you're shooting action. I've had that same 70-200mm f4 for over a year and used it at my daughter's field hockey games and the pictures came out really nice. I have also used it with a Tamron 1.4x extender and didn't have any problems, but I understand the 2x may cause problems, especially with autofocus.

For slower panning shots, the IS does help some. I have noticeably better panning shots, at even slower shutter speeds, with some form of IS (1/250 and slower).

With the 1.4, it seemed fine. AF wasn't noticeably different. I didnt look at the photos with magnifying glass, but image quality seemed fine. I've only used it on the 1Dm2, which is only like 8 megapixel, so who knows maybe on the 5Dm2 with the 30 billion megapixels you could notice a difference in sharpness. with the 2.0 though, that puts you at f/8, not sure how well it would autofocus, and i'd bet the image quality is reduced a bit

Hey guy's I dont know shit about DSLR's but I have been wanting to get into some photo. I would like to get into some time lapse stuff, photo's over the course of a several min to a several hrs. You could start for even cheaper with any Canon Rebel and either a computer (DSLRRemotePro for Mac) or a timer remote similar to this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Opteka-Camera-remote-control-cable/dp/B0012H4UQ0

(disclaimer: I use the Canon brand remote)

You'll also want a decent tripod and possibly a power adapter-battery converter depending on length of the time lapse

:thumbup

d7000 is a great camera if you can afford it. for time lapse you want a sturdy tripod, and there are a number of remotes to use. if you are doing just star trail time lapse, theres a free program that does it for you easy. for video, there are numerous programs to learn...

Just took this, now off to bed

The Nikon D5000 has interval program. So you can program it to shoot for 500shots every 2 or 3 or10 secs. I second the good sturdy tripod. I have a manfrotto one and it serves me well.

Plus all you Barf-tographers, Borrow lenses has a extra week of rental free. Just use coupon code: freeweek. Seems like a great deal to me! Gonna use a 35ml 1.8 nikon for the holidays. I think lens rental is also doing it.

Well, hello there everyone!

I've been MIA for awhile, but I'm back. Or, at least, I hope to be back. :)

I sold my D70 back in the spring and have been shooting with the iPhone 4 exclusively.

Now... I want a D90! :banana

Found one on Craigslist for $550 (body only) -- whaddya think? Should I hold out? Can I do better? Very casual observation of the asking prices on CL would suggest this is a decent price.

I can also get the 55-200 VR for $150.

I may just hold out and shoot with the nifty fifty for a while and save... The D90 upgrade alone will be huge coming from the antiquated D70, methinks.

Trying really hard to think of a reason not to buy...

Well they are $800 new. If condition is fine that's good price. I've got 50k shutters on mine and still love it

Cool!

My only reservation is, well... that it's just not going to be enough. I'm going to want good glass. My mind is already racing... Do I make do with a cheap 55-200mm VR? Get a cheap wide angle? A 28mm 2.8D? A 35mm 1.8? Something more expensive but with really shallow DoF like an 85mm 1.8? Break the bank and get a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8... and on and on I go...

Compromises. Sigh.

If you're as stupid as I am, the cost of the body is nothing compared to the lenses. I have at least five times more into my four L-lenses than I do in my Canon 40D body and they're worth every penny.

Yeah, totally. The D90 is going to be a big upgrade for me. I can see keeping it around for at least a couple of years and spending money on glass.

That said, as a fun exercise.............

If I could only go with a nifty-fifty and ONE other lens, for the next 6 months (completely arbitrary), what lens should it be?

I'm so non-plussed when it comes to kit lenses, even though a 55-200mm or an 18-105mm is really the practical, obvious answer.

What I want is a prime. Any of the DX lenses should be relatively cheap. Yeah, it would force me to use only two focal lengths for a while -- but then, it would force me to use only two focal lengths for a while. :nerd I love portraiture so I'm leaning towards a longer focal length.

And c'mon, primes do everything better than crappy kit lenses.

Am I being masochistic, or does anyone feel me here? :laughing

get the 35 1.8 as its pretty cheap, and while its a dx lens, it 'works' on full frame too if you ever went that route. sell the 50 and pick up the 85 1.8. now you have two primes, one thats regular length (35mm on cropped body) and short tele (85mm)
