Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

:party
Everything has finally arrived for my beginner's off-camera strobe setup:
cheapo cowboy studio triggers
cheapo light stand, swivel bracket and umbrella
I'm actually pretty pleased with most everything, considering what I paid; the triggers seem spot-on. The swivel bracket is a POS though, I'll be upgrading that.

should be a good starting point, long as nobody sneezes.

Hope you remembered lots of rechargeable batteries! :teeth

Congrats. I bet you're just itching for people to try it out on too. Might want to try Model Mayhem, there's usually someone local willing to help out.

Sorry about the swivel bracket - mine were pretty good, but I think I might have got them from Kamera Korner, used.

On another topic, Aris, when are you getting the MkIII? Just came out today...

I see they feedback about the shitty AF must have got through. Went from 9 point to SIXTY ONE!!!! Clearly not taking any chances this time.

Can't justify the upgrade, but the nicer AF would sure be nice to have, and a usable ISO of 24K or something silly.

Actually, even if it's not usable, I would bet the performance at 6400 is a lot better than the MarkII.

at first I thought you were talking about Mortal Kombat 3.... which got me excited... and though I didn't remember any character named AF, anything going from 9 to 61 is good so I again, got excited....

Then you had to ruin it with words I recognized, like ISO..... :rant

Ok, back to my corner

Right now no plans to upgrade. If I do, it will be the 1D. I'm shooting a lot more sports these days, and the faster frames rates on the 1D would help.

But, for now, there's nothing really lacking with my gear. Of course that may change later.

Hey folks! It's been a long time. I thought I'd poke my head in here and ask a software question. I got a Macbook Air a few months ago and naturally, it's only got 128 GB of space. Obviously I take a lot of photos and well, it appears I've got 70 GB of photos. With all the other stuff I can't delete, I've got to offload a big chunk of the photos to my external drive.

I'm using iPhoto and increasingly, Lightroom 3. I know iPhoto (both?) can be rather persnickety when it comes to file management, so I'm coming to you, my BARF DSLR brethren: how do I manage this?

I assume the best way is to keep photos > 6 months on the external drive, but I'm not sure how to do that with iPhoto or Lightroom.

Help!

:confused

Surely you can just do a search of files modified before a certain date, and move them?

Get 2 external drives, and keep 1 off-site.

Yes, I could... but I thought iPhoto (Lightroom?) goes berzerk if you move files around, since everything in iPhoto is ghostly managed it it's own iPhoto "database".

Yes?

Have you tried using Lightroom to move the files to the external drive? It shouldn't go crazy if you use it to do the move.

BTW, have you posted your pics anywhere on-line yet? I'd like to check out your progress.

I have a 1.5 tb hard drive on my computer dedicated to photos. about 1/3 full now. I also have an external 1tb that i back up on every once in a while.

Quick question:

Where to get nude prints done? Really like Costco, but the local one won't do them.

I can do mail-order, but then, I'd rather it was somewhere I could go to if there are issues with gamma/color etc.

I use WHCC.com exclusively. When you sign up, they will let you order a few 8x10's for free to make sure that there is no issue with color. If the first sample is good, you're good to go from there. The good part is that they use a machine that turns the digital file into light that exposes real photo paper instead of printing it with ink.

The metallic prints really bring out the colors.

looks like the Nikon d800 is now the DxOMark #1 camera. Even beats out the Phase One IQ180 ($50,000 medium format, got a score of 91).

I ordered mine second it became available on preorder at B&H. Come shipping day, word is Nikon sent too few to all the big online retailers and it'll be who know how long till people get em.

So I went to Best Buy who had 3 laying around in stock and picked it up :D

You might want to check out Adorama.com. I used to print tons of stuff there when I was living in NY. It is more expensive than Costco, but cheaper than any reputable online vendors. They are one of the larger photography stores in NY. Downside is that there is virtually no customer service since the entire process is computer automated.

May try them too, thanks for the tip, didn't realize they did prints.

More on-topicish - trip to the UK coming up.

Do I scrimp and save to get the 24-70 L series lens - which would be nice as a walk-around lens (Probably still take the 17-40, but not the 70-200, would take the 85 F1.8 just because it's so nice for pics of family).

OR

Spend a lot less and get a decent P&S? I'm thinking of the Olympus series, like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/808142-REG/Olympus_V206011BU000_E_PM1_Digital_Camera_with.html

Or is that still going to be a pain to carry? Obviously way smaller, but...

Ideally like 6400ISO with decent noise performance, and small. I like that particular Olympus because it has a hot shoe, and decent ISO performance (so I've been told...).

Yay, nay? Something else entirely?

Ended up getting the Olympus.

I've played with the G12 before, but that's pushing size (even the Olympus is), plus the Olympus has higher reach on the ISO end of things, and does true 1080 - plus the option to swap the lens for a FF20mm (40mm equivalent) F1.7 lens was too much to turn down. And with that lens, it does fit in your pocket...

Can't argue with the reach of the lens of the Canon tho... it IS a more serious camera, but the Olympus usability has so far been thoroughly endorsed by the missus - no small achievement :thumbup

Hmm. This thread hasn't seen much activity in a long time.

I'm considering picking up a Canon 100-400mm L lens to be used for trackday/action photography. Anybody have any personal experience with it or thoughts/opinions?

It'd be my most expensive photography purchase to date if I went with it, but as I can't be right out on track like Dito/Joe, the extra 100mm on the end over my current 28-300mm lens should be great for taking better shots from a distance, at least that's what I figure. Plus, my current go-to lens doesn't have any kind of IS :(

Or if you have any other recommendations, I'm all ears. I see that Sigma makes some zoom lenses that go out into the 500mm range with image stabilization, but reviews are glowing more for Canon's lens having a better auto-focus system and taking better shots overall.

I don't know that I've heard of anyone disliking their 100-400, though I've never had one myself. There's a fellow at work who has a bunch of prints in his office and they look sharp as anything I've seen, some are heavy crops too. I've owned a couple 400/5.6s and they're killer lenses, especially for the price, you couldn't go wrong with one of those. As for the Sigma, years ago I had the 50-500 non-OS version, it was a good lens for the price, but a pinch soft and on helluva dust pump.
