Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

SB-400 is a great little flash. :thumbup It's more powerful than the camera's built-in flash, and as long as you have a light-colored ceiling you should be able to bounce it no problem. I forgot about that one. Definitely far better than nothing.

Input please. Most of these I took the first day I had the camera. All the indoor shots are with the 50 mm f/1.8, the outdoor ones are with the 55-200mm kit lens.

This set of photos was taken indoors, at night, in an area lit with recessed fluorescent bulbs (those energy saver bulbs, I think they qualify as fluorescents), no flash, in Program AE, most of these were taken at 800 ISO

Sorry if the subject matter is not so exciting, but I don't get out much these days, and I have plenty of material close to home.

Some more indoor shots. I'm finding out that babies are tougher than animals to shoot :(

By this point I was experimenting with ISO 1600, which did give me faster shutter speeds, but the room here was much darker than the other room, with only two bulbs lighting a room that is approximately 25' x 18' you can see one of the lamps in the background of the first pic.

Outdoors.

These photos were taken under changing lighting conditions, during the early stages of sunset. I was having a really difficult time finding the right settings to make the pics even halfway decent. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated to improve the quality of outdoor pictures, particularly when the sun is not high in the sky.

haha :toothless

Hey, where can I go in San Francisco to buy lenses? Preferably near downtown.

Gotta get that 50mm f/1.8 before the holidays and buying online is going to take a while to ship, given Thanksgiving.

If you're desparate to shop downtown, you could go to Gasser's on 2nd, but I'd HIGHLY recommend you avoid it. Its all overpriced snobbery and douchebaggery over there. I don't even like to spend the company's dime there.

If you can, go to Calumet at 18th & Bryant. Much better prices, much nicer staff. They will have what you need.

But then again, given the saturation of dSLRs out on the market these days, you can probably by the 50mm at Best Buy.

Well, I will heed your warning. I actually ducked into this store called "DISCOUNT CAMERA" on Kearney near Post. I got bad advice and attitude the first time I went there (you don't need a 50mm/1.8 because your kit lens already does that), then a day later I thought I'd give them another chance... it was hilarious, even worse. I can't explain, but you get the idea. You have to really try to be such a ****. So I took my ball and went home.

I have NO problems now going to Best Buy instead of supporting the local guy, not worth the effort. The kids at Best Buy were equally lacking knowledge, but at least they were enthusiastic.

Right on! I still give props to the folks at Calumet, tho. Nice, knowledgeable folks there, and they have gear that best buy won't

+1 for Calumet. That's the spot for all of my photo gear...

b&h is where i get my stuff...but each to his own...customer service is great...

there's also Photographer's Supply down on I think 2nd and Bryant.
They were nice enough to me when I needed batteries.
YMMV.

Hey! I went down to Ritz Ultra at lunch and bought a 50mm f/1.8! I know I have heard people trash the place, but the saleslady was knowledgeable and very friendly. It may have been luck, but I'll likely go there again.

That said, one question: do I have to manually set the aperture?? There's this lock/aperture ring thing... and of course, I am a noob.

Ok, I am a dork, I think I figured it out. I set it to f/22 and I guess the camera figures it out when it's locked into that setting. I can change the aperture on the camera instead of the lens that way.

Btw, this motor is freaking noisy!

Ok can someone explain a concept for me, please...

Depth of field is created by:

1) focal length
2) aperture

Can someone explain the difference between the two?

I have seen some photos on Flickr with beautiful depth-of-field that were shot at 200mm and, I believe, f/4. Likewise, I have seen the same with a 1.8 aperture @ 50mm.

6 of one and half-dozen of the other?

so where is the article that breaks down "aperture"? :teeth Dan?

I'm still working with my slr. and trying to get better at point and shoot without much prep.

have two books that might be of help to some:

"Digital Photography Book 1 & Book 2, by Scott Kelby

pretty straight forward and good information without a lot of the technical stuff that might confuse beginners.
