DMV renewal tests

Stunning follow up;

The RealID showed up in yesterday's mail- that's ten days after doing the thing at DMV.

Renewed my Driver License last month and got my Real ID. Only took 30 minutes total which was nice. I was expecting a way longer wait. No retest and I made sure my M1 transferred over. Haven't had to retest since I first got my license 20 years ago. The only thing that sucks is they punch your old license so your stuck not being able to buy beer/alcohol for 3 weeks or however long it takes to get your license.

The old license should still show your birthdate, and the temporary paper copy they give you also shows your birthdate...

Yeah I've tried the last couple times I have renewed my license and earlier this month trying to buy beer for 4th of July.. Haven't found a store/shop/bar that will serve me with the punched license and even accompanied with my paper license. Too scared it might be an Alcohol Beverage Control trap I guess. Got my new license now so won't worry about it until next renewal. I should just plan ahead and buy beer before my appointment.

The last couple of posts remind me of something: while you’re in the DMV go ahead and ask for a California Identification Card.

It’s like $15 bucks (30?) and it’s cheap insurance to have at home that horrible day you lose your wallet.

Without a valid photo ID you can’t get a new ATM card, replace other important cards, buy beer while you wait for the replacement Drivers License and all that stuff that makes us “people”. That little ID card makes it happen.

Do it.

How about a passport? Wouldn't you be able to do all the stuff you claim you can't do without a driver license using a passport?

They're "supposed to" :cool. My clerk bailed for lunch while I was doing the MC test online, so when I got done another looked it all over and said "you're done" and off I went. Thought I got over, but the new RID showed up right away and stole my thunder...

Went in for my retest yesterday after reading the 2016 Motorcycle Handbook backwards and forwards numerous times. Had my wife quiz me the night before. No problem passing, still missed one.

This time they never asked to look at my license and no hole was punched in it. License is still valid till September. Supposed to have new one in 7 to 10 days.

I wasn't planning on getting a Real ID to avoid the DMV headache. I was thinking of using my passport for situations (flying) where the CA license is no good. Is there any reason that this wouldn't work? Or is there some hidden benefit of the Real ID I'm not considering?

FYI- when I returned to CA three years ago after living out of state for 10 years. Had to take the written moto test and thought it was a pain in the ass.

I got a license renewal notice and went down to DMV, but was told I need glasses! Well last year I had cataract surgery and had two diffrent lenses implanted. One for distance and one for reading and the brain compensates near and far activities. I can see better than most 20 year olds, but when taking the DMV eye test I had to cover each eye. The one for distance is fine, but the one for close is blurry as to be expected. So DMV won't give me a license till I have glasses I don't need or wear. Kathy's blind in one eye, but no problem renewing license!

check to make sure they transferred your M1

I had mono vision after Lasik. When I went in for the vision test when I couldn't read the board with both eyes they had me look in another vision test machine on the counter. Read that just fine so no glasses needed. I have since had cataract surgery and didn't get the mono vision so except for some glare on the vision board, that I was able to move to see, I didn't have any problem.

I don't want to have to take my passport to fly from Boise to Oakland. That is the only reason I want a Real ID.

Had to renew my passport anyways. For same $140 fee got a "passport card" with it. It's the same size as a CDL and says "not valid for international travel". So I'm going to shine the "real ID" thing and just stick that in my wallet.
