DMV still sucks and workers are rude as hell....

Make an appointment online, definitely, I've never had a problem at the san mateo DMV. Last time I went in there I skipped the line for my appointment and my ticket was called within 5 minutes.

Painless. :D

AAA is awesome but I still have to go into the dmv for DL related transactions such as DL renewal once every five years.

Ja, I just smile and say 'hello' when I walk up, act nice, and they act nice right back.

:laughing

No, they don't. Not usually, anyways. I know they have a suck job and possibly a predisposition for being cranky, so I'm nice. Last time I was at the DMV, the lady got more bitchy with me because I was being nice! :party I wasn't being patronizing, just pleasant. When I was done and said "thank you", she looked at me like I had two heads.

The ONLY DMV I've been to that has nice people is San Luis Obispo and I've been too quite a few.

If you need to do anything beyond normal registration or licensing shit, they don't know how to do it. Call Sacramento first. If you have to go in to an office, go prepared or you will have to return.

As far as appointments go, good luck with that! I tried to make an appointment recently and the only remotely convenient times were months out! For any office within an hour drive! Insanity.

On top of all of that, they are probably making more than you and will certainly have a better pension. ;)

I always seem to get the SEIU rep at the seaside DMV. Shes nice, and always tells me to stop speeding.

and she never checks my insurance... :wtf

I found the Hayward DMV to be friendly and helpful. It cought me off guard.

OK! I finally got thru and had a chance to speak with a human being instead of some answering machine.
Apointments? Yes! next time I will do that.
PEACE everyone!

I remember going to the Oakland DMV back in the mid eighties... If you remembered those times as well, you would have nothing but GOOD things to say about DMV today :)

My personal favorite memory of the old DMV was the 2 1/2 hour wait in the main line so that I could wait another 40 minutes in another line.

I go to the Pleasanton DMV now and even without an appointment on what they say if is the busiest times for them, I can get in and out in 45 minutes max, and my personal best was 8 minutes when I was in once registering a trailer.

The people are far nicer now than they were, and with things like car and bike registration online, you get your registration stickers instantaneously compared to before where you would wait weeks and weeks after you paid.

DMV is one of the few state agencies that I will wholeheartedly agree has been vastly improved over the years.

Same experience on both points. I tried to register a "motorized" bicycle and man, what a pain! I talked to the DMV on the phone, went down to the local police station, talked to another LEO on the phone, called the CA dept of insurance, etc, all to try to figure out, in advance, the legal issues with such a vehicle. It was a mess. I finally got one answer re: the registration from the DMV service tech (phone). I went down to the local DMV (yes, appointments were so far out, you could not even make them on the phone or online - they just appeared unavailable), just to have the two different DMV personal adamantly contradict my phone answer. I went with the phone guy, printed the form online, then got my registration and plate some months later.

If you're wondering why I didn't avoid the DMV in the first place - well, I needed a M2 license for my "special" bicycle, so I had a test to take.

edit:
oops, forgot my other recent experience. My son got his license. We waited in the wrong line for an hour for the driving test, and were told to get in another, wait it out, then get back in the first. This was one of those opportunities for a little indelible lesson (you parents know what I'm talking about). I said, "this is the definition of 'bureaucracy'."

I've never had a problem at the dmv, except for the long wait. Thats why I always get a AAA membership because you can go there to do dmv stuff. I just came from there and was literally in and out the door with a new sticker in less than 5 minutes. Plus they have excellent road side assistance (not for motos tho)....even still its worth the membership just for the dmv privileges. I think the cheapest membership is $60/year....so worth it.

AAA FTW! - Moto tow costs $100 per year and you get free Notary services, 200 miles of towing, free maps, a travel agency, and virtually all of the services DMV provides with little or no waiting.

Just transferred ownership of a vehicle last week with no pink slip at AAA - without an appointment we were in and out in less than 15 minutes.

Plus F'ing One!!! AAA FTW!!!!1!!

Yupp!!! AAA x 100!! Plus I know the guy working there :)

Never had an unpleasant experience at the DMV. Every time I went to go get a new license, or register a bike or car I just bought, it was always in and out in under an hour. Workers there generally never gave me crap, and the number of questions I was asked was kept to a minimum.

This was at the Claremont DMV, btw.

Then again, I can only imagine that things can get pretty frustrating when you're doing something like registering a bike with a different engine #, or something of that sort.
