Today I came home from work to find my dirt bike cover on the ground next to the bike. I'm thinking .1% chance the weather took it off. It is chained to a pole through the front wheel right now. So I figured out Progressive would only charge me $75/year to cover it from theft and liability (hit someone on a trail I guess) on an off road policy. I signed up for the peace of mind until I move my bike(s) to a storage facility. Do you insure anything off-road?

I never have. But, it might not be a bad idea if you have a bunch of shit that someone might sue for if you are negligent and cause an injury to someone. I mean personal liability insurance.

I've had my dirt/supermoto bikes insured through Erich Stiegler. He gave me a good rate and great suggestions on coverage.

Yeah. I have enough assets to lose I suppose. And a steady job. Mostly worried about theft because the bay area is garbage. Area is getting worse (it feels). They arrested a multi-murderer at the corner of my street a couple days ago. WTF. The property manager, I talked to today, said there hasn't been any reported theft from inside the complex for 24 years, then a week ago my bicycle was stolen at nighttime.

$75 was just cheap for now for a year. Moving it to a secure facility tomorrow. But I'm a little worried maybe they'll come back tomorrow more prepared to take it before I get home...

USAA renters insurance apparently won't cover the dirt bike. Unless the customer service lady was wrong.

^This^
My g/f did this as soon as her teen son began riding dirt.
Some called her crazy.
I called her brilliant.
Never needed it but we slept well.

I've heard rumors of lawsuits happening at Carnegie over accidents but not sure.... $75/yr sure is cheap peace of mind

They're not rumors and they're not restricted to Carnegie.
Carnegie gets more attention due to head-ons. Hollister, for example is mostly directional....but still.

Home owners and renters insurance will not cover anything that is wheeled and meant to convey a person (found this out the hard way). That means dirt bikes, ATV's, race only bikes, etc, etc.. If you want to have anything covered in that area you have to get a policy on them. Lucky for me I have only dual sport dirt bikes....

+1 Great guy!

One of the reasons I've always prefered Metcalf and Hollister over Carnegie, even when I lived in East Bay.

I have an umbrella policy which covers that sort of thing. I don't insure my KDX, but I insure the crap out of my 690 Enduro.

I would check the numbers on what the insurance will pay for settlement. I've found that my TW200 is worth less than $2k, and the full coverage premium was somewhere around $500 a year.

I feel like adding theft on my dirt bike helped the multi bike discount and actually made it cheaper. When I re quote taking it off my premium goes up :shrug

My best friend had a brand new Honda XL 650 stolen right off the trailer in front of his house -- and it was locked to the trailer. He had it insured and so was able to replace it right away.

Probably worth it for theft coverage for sure. If not a moto policy, make sure it's covered under your homeowners or a separate property policy. I had full coverage on my ktm 350 excf, but it's plated and I kept it registered, and the price difference between full coverage vs. liability only was negligible.

+2.. Erich insures all of our home, vehicles and toys too! For many of the reasons stated above... Renter Ins., will not cover vandalism or theft of dirt bikes at home. We have liability and comprehensive on all dirt bikes, no collision. I believe it was also $75 each but may have been cheaper. When going riding, the bikes are often locked in the bed of a truck in some sketch places so peace of mind they are covered for theft or the attempt..

I have all my bikes insured with liability and comprehensive (theft). One street bike, two dual sports, and three dirt only bikes. At my age and place in life, its really affordable. Had too many bikes stolen over the years.....

Pro tip, you dont need collision to add comprehensive. Makes it much more affordable. :thumbup
