Does this count as a freeway ride?

Hi guys and gals,

Seeing as I'm still on my permit only, I'm not allowed to ride on freeways. However, I'd still like to get some practice going faster than 35mph, so I was wondering if this route might work?

It's like a little section of freeway next to 101, so I could get up to speed. My question is, does it count as a freeway? I don't want to get into trouble but I'd love to try shifting above 3rd gear! :laughing

Thanks!

I can't tell from the image you loaded. Is it a freeway or just a frontage road?

You know, there are lots of roads around where you can go faster than 35 that are not freeways.

How long until you get your license? Have you taken the MSF?

Is that the on-ramp to 101, or a frontage road? I'm no LEO, but I'm sure it'd be ok. Or, how about head west from that area down woodside rd, and hit Alameda de las Pulgas to Junipero-Serra, then page mill to Oregon expwy? Then turn around before the 101 and reverse the route?

I think this is a frontage road, since it is not a highway entrance ramp.

Not a frontage road. It's a long stretch of merge lane that has a physical divide between it and the freeway. Whether it counts as freeway or not, is a gray area. Ask in the Leo section.

But in any case, I don't think you'd be cited even if you were pulled over there.

Happy riding!

If you're in RWC or San Carlos, ride up Edgewood Rd to Canada Rd. I think the speed limit is 50 or 55 mph. It a nice easy road to practice going a little faster.

That little road is a merging feeder to/from SB 101 in San Carlos. So yeppers, it is part of 101 and a freeway on-/off-ramp.

So what part of freeway do you not understand? :p

Oh shush, you! :p :laughing

It did seem like a grey area and since I'm British I'm not as familiar with some of the highway specifics as you natives. :) Thanks for the help!

aw shit... i looked on google maps and saw that wasn't a frontage road... nevermind, that *IS* a freeway

that's a bit far from my service area, sorry... if it wasn't access controlled it'd be okay.

This is a freeway, as defined by the vehicle code:
332. "Freeway" is a highway in respect to which the owners of abutting lands have no right or easement of access to or from their abutting lands or in respect to which such owners have only limited or restricted right or easement of access.

here's a clue :)

I work right off of Holley and ride in frequently. Let me know if you want someone to ride with at lunch or in the evenings.

That's tellin' 'im off!

Yep, that's a highway/freeway. But there's plenty of roads that have a 45 mph speed limit. Just a matter of finding them.

you can get way over the speed limit on el camino. i used to commute up and down that when i only had my permit

I think it's pretty safe to say that if you pass a sign that says "Freeway Entrance" it's a Freeway, yeah?

Yeah, I didn't see that until orbframe posted the Google maps link. :p

I have to be really careful though, I'm here on a work visa and even the most minor misdemeanours can count against me. :|

I'm hopefully going to be able to pass my safety course on Sunday (retaking the second day due to pains in my clutch hand last time!) and then I can ride where I like. :thumbup

The sign says nothing about permit holders (moto or cage).

... I have to be really careful though, I'm here on a work visa and even the most minor misdemeanours can count against me. :| ....

So what kinds of moving violations were you warned about not committing?

I've read about folks being kicked out for DUIs but not for minor traffic violations (infractions).

ya know, call me crotchety and all.....

but you are a Brit, here on a temporary visa. You admit that you don't drive, and are very new to CA roads.....

You are attempting to get your MC license, without any experience driving in CA let alone riding a bike

Are you sure this is a wise decision? I ask in all seriousness. Driving here is a very very very different proposition than it is in the UK

Riding a motorcycle cannot even be compared between the nations. Seriously, riding here is NOT like it is at home. At best you are invisible, at worst you are a target for arseholes who don't like bikes

Again I ask, are you SURE this is a wise decision

And, they drive on the wrong side of the road here, and you haven't become acclimated to this in a car, let alone on a bike

just my .02
