Doom, Gloom and dealing with negativity from non riders

I've gotten some that say "i have no sympathy if you die since you're involved in something crazy like riding"

I've got a neighbor I am friends with and when I told him that I bought a bike he warned me that his BIL recently died in a motorcycle crash. I told him I'd rather die than be a quad and he said "Well, I can only agree to feeding you and changing your diaper one day per week if you become a quad so you'll need six other people in the neighborhood to help." I told him he is a true friend and be sure to bring the cyanide suppository.

OP gives such a polite answer. I'm more of an ornery disposition so such advice are never given. lol

Sorry I hurt feelings there. :(
Got that.

Twas a Dainty boy reference and not meant for a woman to hear. My feeling and expression. Bad move posting it.

'Oh so and so got hurt when such and such happened'
'Gosh that's terrible; yes drivers can be dangerous but we train for it and just try to be more aware than the other guy. So far so good!'

'Oh, I hate it when you guys...'
'Oh yeah, I imagine that can be confusing if you're not used to it. In fact it's much safer because...'

Every interaction can be a teaching moment. :thumbup

No feelings were hurt, just a gentle reminder that you have some brave and adventurous pussy-bearers 'round these parts. :)

Might be the OP joins the ranks of fearless moto-ladies :thumbup

It's funny, I don't get that much anymore. I guess at 60 they get the point that I've been riding for over 40 years and not likely to stop. I guess it also helps that all my friends ride.
When I get the "friend died on a bike story", I tell them about the family of 12 that burned up in the mini-van. That usually puts it into perspective for them.

I haven't had to listen to that kind of crap in a long time.
When someone starts, I just tell them I've been riding since 1969, the last time I've crashed on a motorcycle was 1977, and never had a serious injury in the four times I've crashed.
I don't mention that the last one is due largely to some very good luck.
I do say that the second one had less to do with luck than survival instincts learned during the years before my last crash.
Best to just calmly say you're living the way you want to live, and that we're all just a single bad choice away from death, for a thousand possible reasons.

Everyone is their own person. Methinks barf should be more accepting of all kinds of ladies. Too many seem eager to put this one in her place. Not cool, not good for barf.

When people ask/tell me that motorcycle riding is dangerous I tell them "Waking up in the morning is dangerous"

At my new job that I started 4 weeks ago more than half the guys I work with ride motos so it is nice to be in a moto friendly environment

Look at the posts and see who's talking down to her and/or being condescending.

You're making it sound like someone is being sexist here. I've read the posts and am not seeing it. I see one guy who has an abrasive way of taking a contrary position, but even he raises a good point and it had nothing to do with gender.

No overt sexism, yet the women newcomers seem to eventually always get this crap, and not just from dudes. You seem like a smart guy, dunno why you can't see it. Maybe ask some of the ladies who have tried to fit in and don't come around any more. :dunno

Would you mind calling out the specific examples you're thinking of? I've only seen one guy speak with derision and it wasn't sexist. One or two opined that maybe OP is getting the comments because she's a woman. Maybe it's a factor and maybe not; we can't know.

Just about every post in the thread has been constructive it seems to me. The only opinion that matters is that of the OP; I hope she is OK with the discussion.
