Drinking and Riding

Riding sober is pretty daunting. I won't even swing my leg over a bike until I've had a couple to calm my nerves. 'specially at the track.

There's a certain parking lot somewhere in marin county where you could count on being offered a hit on pretty much any sunday morning.

Just say "no thanks" when it's passed your way, but don't try to keep up with those guys when they get back on their bikes.

I don't know how/why they do it, but some of them have been doing it since the early 70's, and still at it.

Motorcycling is very dangerous, I can't do it without tossing down a few Jack's...

Sometimes I wonder if it is safe to do the HERON and go riding...? :toothless

doing anything that seriously impares your judgement and reaction time is not wise, especially when riding a motorcycle. That being said, do not tell me that I do not know my limit where alcohol is concerned. I am an adult and have a full understanding of the ramifications of my actions, including alcoholic beverages. I know how much I can drink before I begin to slur my words, I know how much I can drink before I react violently to an asshat, I know how much I can drink before I take an unscheduled nap...
I know my limits, just because you do not know yours, don't assume the rest of us do not either.

The two simply do not mix. Alcohol and riding is like oil and water, please do not attempt to mix them.

I'm posting this because I just read the account of a member who was struck by an intoxicated rider. His last statement was a very humble request for those who drink and ride to know their limits.
I know the safe BAL limit: it's ZERO.

Funny timing, just today Lindsay Lohan got smacked with 90 days. She's a perfect example of a totally raging alcoholic going through life thinking everybody owes her something.

I have zero sympathy with drunk drivers. I know alcoholism is a sickness, but driving drunk is not a sickness it is really stupid judgment tainted with a large dose of arrogance... Lindsay Lohan is living proof of where that leads. Unfortunately, they also kill other people in the process. Those whiners are lucky I am not in charge: I would give five years prison time for a first DUI (no exceptions) and 15 years for the second.

Want to guess how many DUI's there would be in that world?

I cruise the Napa Valley every once-in-awhile and it amazes me how many people on bikes go wine tasting.

If you feel the need to prove that you can drink one or two beers and ride home, please don't.

If you feel compelled to tell me that I don't know my limits, am not the boss of you, etc., you have issues.

I take no issue with those who have a sense of humor or a keen wit. I do take issue with those who endanger themselves, and others with their irresponsible behavior.

I posted because I read about a BARF member who got hit by a woman with less than two years riding experience. She was very likely intoxicated, I believe she had two or three drinks in her. Her husband was apologetic and I have no doubt she's not proud of her actions. It's unlikely she will make that mistake again. I don't think anyone was seriously injured. However, a BARFer had a bad experience that resulted in damage to his ride. THAT SUCKS for everyone who was involved. Chances are that it could have been prevented by following the simple rule DO NOT INGEST ANY AMOUNT OF ANY SUBSTANCE that could possibly lead to IMPAIRED JUDGEMENT!

I've said my peace, please either respect it or, agree to disagree QUIETLY.

:rofl:rofl:rofl

(Explanation: Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. That means that it diminshes your ability to make decisions and JUDGE your own actions and abilities.) That's why so many drunken driving tickets are given. ALL of the people who got them were SURE they were unimpaired. I was when I got mine. i KNEW I was fine. :laughing) Sounds like you are making excuses for driving drunk. Hope I am not around when you fuck up.

I'll give another view of why its not wise to drink and ride. If you are involved in a accident that was not your fault, but there was alcohol present in any level, your screwed.

If I had been drinking when I had my accident almost two years ago, it would be way harder for me to collect for damages, but since I wasn't it sure has made it easier. I remember the first thing I heard the CHP ask the medic, that was if I had any signs of alcohol in my system and I'm very glad that I had not been drinking at all that day.

FWIW, my wife works as a HR rep and has mentioned a few interesting things about paying out life insurance if drugs or alcohol were the cause of death in accident. Like there may not be any payout.

The above have had the biggest impact on my drinking and riding, not its unsafe to do so.

Most alcoholics live their whole lives telling themselves the lie that they "know their limits" and can always stop whenever they get near them. They also live on the lie that they are "just fine" and not impaired.

I'd like to thank all that responded. This has been an outstanding conversation. It has shown me just how intelligent and up front the members of this community are. I'm proud to be a member of BARF.

I look forward to meeting some of you at a social or group ride. I'm not usually one to ride with others, I've seen too many guys go down from not knowing their limits. However, I'd like to ride with a few of you guys.

If you order a beer at the grub stop I will politely walk over to you and ask you to hand me your keys. If you do I'll hand you my business card so that you and I can make the necessary arrangements. If you don't I'll get back on my ride and do the lone wolf thing, after paying my bill of course.

I'm really self conscious about my riding so I have to have a bunch of drinks just to get on it.

In all seriousness, I will drink 1-2 beer and still ride assuming I've had sufficient time for the alcohol to work its way out of my system, but typically no more than 1 standard size beer. I will extend it to two if I'll be somewhere for like 2+ hours.
