I went from having a drz 400sm and liked the option of being able to ride dirt trials. Anyone ever put trail tires on a ducati 796 hypermotard or is that just crazy?

Also any input on 1100 vs 796 hypermotard? I figure the 1100 is heavier but is the extra power that necessary?

I had a HM1000S and no matter how much I rode it could never get comfortable with its powerband. It wasn't a good sportsbike and it wasn't a good supermoto and all the power before 5k then no power from 6 on up just doesn't work for me- granted, pulling the wheel out of every turn was fun for a little while, but even solid gold pussy gets old.

2009 Aprila Dorsoduro 750

I thought about one, look at it's competition and a review where the Dorsoduro won 8 out of 9 comparison tests and ended with this and couldn't be happier.

If you want a Ducati, then get a Ducati, I have no brand loyalty.

I had a driver total my 690SMC and put me in the hospital. When I came out of it, I did some shopping around for another 690 and they are SO FUCKING OVERPRICED.

So I spent the money on a 990SMR. I am slower rider on one of these, but its still a shitton of fun. A combination of mental torque and just getting fucked hard makes okay being a slower rider.

If you're looking to be fast on the street, get something as light as possible. If you're looking for maximum fun, these bloated tards are fun.

My friend does adventure riding and touring on his multistrada 620. Supposedly it is the same as the hyper

Well not exactly the same obviously. Maybe similar is a better word. Not my idea but from an owner of both.

Your asking questions that don't have a carved in stone answer.

What someone (that you don't know) says, depends on their riding skill, and where they were riding.

And percentage of the locations or types of riding.

If actual trail riding (not just dirt/gravel roads) is included, with also paved roads...One of those places is going to be sucky riding. And...an 1100 off road, is just a pig.

Power is a function of twisting the throttle...and that isn't getting done if one is struggling with the weight and size, of the bike.

Here is one of my Ducs. 2009 hyper 1100.
Gotta be one of the funnest bikes I've owned. I'm on a month long touring trip on mine. Picture above is how its set up minus my soft side bags.

I say get the 1100. Dont worry about the upgraded versions. To close to each other that on the street its not going to be noticeable.
Some pit falls... some have leaking head stud issues. Some gas tank warping causing fuel leaks and fitment issues. Like mine did. Then gas range. Mine has pulled 75 to 125 miles to the stock tank on this trip.
I have some motor work, dp system and ecu tune.

The 620 muti is a pile. Not enough power to pull itself out of its own ugly shadow. The 796 is crappy as well.

I have carbon wheels back at home for mine. But they are pretty good around traffic. I'm not a huge fan of wide'ish handle bars lane splitting. But I get over it. Even with the mirrors in, it still not like my paul smart.

Only other noticeable issue. Wind at speed. It can beat the crap out of you.
I'm usec to it now. Been riding from Phx to San Diego, LA, Santa Barbara up highway 1 to Ukiah. Just rolled 10k miles yesterday. Had 3k in November. So yeah accelerated wear. Anyways reversing my route next week. Up to 70mph is ok. 75+ the wind trys to blow you off the back.

Oh and the oil head stud issue. How bad is it? Look at my back tire. I had to pull the rear cylinder in a hotel and reseal it all with orings and head gasket.

Then put a new set of tires on.

I have taken mine trail riding. These black wheels usually have dirt/motardish tires on them. And my carbon wheels are my street wheels. Its fun but not like my xr650. I ride the hyper 1100 because my xr cant handle street and freeway duty. Single cylinder at 85mph all day would explode.

im thinking about picking one of these up myself.

i was thinking of a 796. i dont need the power and goodies the 1100/s has and i prefer a wet slipper clutch, unless i can find the 1100 for a good price.

Freeway riding for extended periods are not fun. You take a beating. Get a sportbile if that is your thing. Hypers are really fun when the road is not straight.

And avoid the lady's version; get the 1100.

i had my mind set on the 796... now i dont..

almost everything ive read now says to go for the 1100.

As a KTM 690 evangelist of 12K street miles and 2K big-track miles, you're full of shit.

At 1st I was going to offer you a cookie. Then relized you already had one when I saw the Miata on your siggy. :rofl

XR650s will not last long when driven like a Hyper 1100. I own both. Both have their own purpose.

Im around the Danville area if you want, I can meet up and show you a few things to look for when checking over a 1100.

As for price. They go from 6k to 10k just depends on options and miles.

By reading what Paul Smart has to say, and what you have had to say...

I'm sayin Paul Smart is savvy, and you don't know Shit from Shineola.
