I thought that had to do with the Gold Rush, or at least the "golden" poppies; California state flower.

both, actually - also a number of state designations (state fish, etc) are "golden"... but those hills are not brown, dammit, not dead either - they are fallow!

I hate to thread jack, but its because, prior to the invasive grass on all the hills, they used to be covered in poppies, when "explorers" came in, it looked like the state was "gold". i'll go get that pic in a few so its not a TOTAL jack...haha

For anyone curious, that building is one of the observatories at Chabot Space & Science Center. They have three big telescopes open for FREE public viewing most Friday and Saturday evenings as well as a planetarium, museum, etc.
