ER6i vs. Skullcandy

After a few years of frequent use, my $99 ER6i's finally gave up the ghost..... I'm not getting anything from one of the buds; I LOVED these!!!

Skull Candy buds are one heck of a deal!!! But they didn't fit comfortably under my helmet. If I remember correctly, they did a pretty good job of blocking out wind noise.

I bought a few other inexpensive buds, but the ER6's will easily the BEST at fidelity AND blocking out wind-noise..... It's nice not having to turn the volume up to the point of damaging my ears.

Change the filter.

It was someone else's kid. Big difference.

Before I buy anything I get one of my friends' kids on the phone. Just to make sure I am making a wise purchase.

I did end of with a stove made by Fischer Price though (instead of the Wolf Range I wanted), however it's all good because I can make awesome cookies in it.

:laughing awesome......

Tom,
I have had a couple of pairs of skull candy earbuds (cheapo ones).

They are hands down the biggest piece of shit I have ever used. They don't stay in my ears while sitting at my desk. And I have small ears.

I loved my er6i's. Mine too frayed, but they were awesome. They blocked the wind noise completely.

32db isolation from any IEM is probably a stretch. I have some custom molded ones like in Hoolis pic, they are great; love 'em, but they are probably more like 25db isolation. Close to what good foam earplugs offer, and vastly better than skull Candy buds.

My kids have managed to kill multiple sets of Skull Candys in no time at all. It seems like a good deal for the price, but it is pretty low grade stuff.

Wait a minute boney,
you might be onto something there!!!

They could be plugged with my own ear wax, gonna check right now before I hit the 'submit' button.....

Uuuuh, these are wierd. Nothing to clean, nothing appears to be blocked. I can hear it working, but not as loud as the other side. Upon close inspection, it looks like the end where the wire is can be removed... though I didn't have any luck removing it... just budging it.

Soooo, what filter? What do you know that I don't? I love these things, but if I can resolve the issue.... I'd rather fix these than give up the money for new buds.

(?????)

I am on my second set of Skull Candy in about a year. I would say that is pretty good. I use them all day at work (commercial air conditioning), motorcycles, bicycles, and running. I am surprised this set is still going, but I will buy another pair when they break.

There is a little screen at the end of the hole where the noise comes out. You should replace the screen every now and then.

I've used a few different kinds, I used up 2 pairs of the SkullCandy brand in about a year. They are not durable.

Haven't found the right brand/model yet.

Sounds like we have more people experiencing sooner-than-later breakage than not.

I use the S4i. They don't seem to seal in my ears as well as the Shure E2s did. The shures also stayed in better when I put on my helmet, but the Klipsch aren't bad, as long as you loop the wires over your ears.

I love having the remote so I can change tracks on my iPhone when I ride. That said, the remote seems to be flaking on me, or doesn't work as well for some reason at freeway speeds. I dunno. It usually works but not always.

Every pair of standard/free iPod headphones I've ever owned had one earbud that died. Shures are ridiculously expensive, but after doing some research, I found that Klipsch headphones are almost as good but only $50-80 depending on which model. I've had mine for under a year and they're still as good as new (I paid about $80 for mine). I've owned other pairs of headphones that cost less than $30-40 and I think it's worth it to pay the extra money for the Klipsch ones PLUS they're 1/3 the price of most Shures and Etymotics.

I tried the er6i's, but their noise suppression didn't impress me (nowhere near as good as good foam earplugs) and they hurt my ears after a few hours. I'm planning to order a pair of custom in-ear monitors like the ones in Hooli's picture. I've seen lots of folks recommend the custom IEM's from "Now Hear This". They're rated at an NRR of 29 and the reviews of the sound quality (especially the ones with the dual drivers in each ear) are very good.

i go through a pair of skullcandy inkds about every 1.5 years. use them every ride every day. what the hell are you guys doing that destroys them in such short amounts of time? ive never had the rubber pieces just fall off on me, what finally goes is a wire on the earbud after a prolonged period of time for me. im sure if youre jerking the fuck out of the cords every time you pick up your ipods yea its gonna break. fwiw i use a 3rd gen shuffle that i keep in my inside pocket with the cord let out about two inches from the factory wrap it comes in.

Had the skullcandy and when they broke got the fuze, can't wait for the fuze to break to go back to the skullcandy. They really work for me, so I see no point in going for the more expensive options.

I had my $12 inked skullcandy for almost a year and a half with no problems till I accidently washed them with my pants :(.

I figured it was better to go through a pair of cheaper buds every year than going through a $100 pair every three years.

Blocked out wind noise even without the music on occasions I forgot to charge my mp3. Basically used them as my earplugs.

Rode a few times with my bose buds and other than a deeper base, it is hard to tell much of a difference when you are riding.

I will definitely be buying another pair of the inked skullcandy.

christ people! how hi-fi do you need if you're listening to 'em on yr bike? keep with the skull candy headphones. they're not the best headphones out there, but their customer service is pretty awesome. they're cheap and they have a ridiculous lifetime guarantee. unfortunately, i lost mine, but you can send them back if they break/you destroy them and they'll replace 'em for free.

seriously, you're on a motorcycle, wearing a helmet, and there's LOTS of noise interference, there is NO reason you need $100 headphones. unless you just wanna show off what a "big baller" you are.

I totally disagree.

Maybe it's just the way my ears are shaped. But whenever I use any kind of earbud, all it does it hurt the shit out of my ears after about five minutes. I also found that if I go faster than 25, they don't block any noise. I used to keep turning up the music until that made my ears hurt too.

With the one pair of better ones I had 6eri or whatever, they fit great and I could listen to my ipod at a regular volume that stayed no matter how fast I went. Mine had the foam earplugs so maybe that made a difference.

Now I just wear plugs.

Umm...maybe people only have one or two sets of GOOD headphones and use them for multiple purposes...including riding :rolleyes
