for $1000 i better get a finger up my butt along w/ the BJ

I'm procrastinating..... I just don't want to part with a hun'ered bucks right now, BUT the ER6i's really ARE that good!
After checking for filters in my ER6i's, I realized that I stopped using them a couple years ago. So I've prolly managed to plug one of my buds with ear wax.... though I normally don't have much wax with which to plug it (it's a medical thang).
So I've been following this thread with the hope that folks would suggest other viable options. $250 is a bit over-the-top for me, but if -KNEW- that they actually performed/sounded better than the ER's I've been sporting, blocked out as much wind-noise, and that they were so industrial as to stand up the abuse of pulling a helmet over them time and time again.... I might give up the money.
I've resorted to my Skull Candy of late, but having been spoiled by the sound quality and comfort of my old ER's, I think I'm just gonna hafta give up the money and buy another pair. I wonder if I can strengthen the connections at the ears with shrink-tubing or something. They held up for me, but the most common complaint has been that the wires break at the buds.
My only desire for the ER6's, would be that they came with an in-line volume control.......
What about (re. customs), the complaints I've heard that the mould is made for your ears under the conditions when they were made..... but that when out on the open road, on a hot day, under the helmet, they change shape and either feel uncomfortable tight or become too small and no longer fit as well????
The complaints I heard were from 9 years ago, have they improved or are there still some people with similar complaints?
