Alright, I know there are a dozen or so of you BARFers that participate in these football conversations every once in a while, so let's start this up since it's only a month away.

  • Who's your team?
  • What starting XI do you want them to use?
  • Who's your pick to win it?
  • Dark horse?
  • Golden Ball?
  • Golden Boot?
  • Golden Glove?
  • Are you going?

Let's talk some football of the other variety!

I guess I'll start

My team is and has always been
la_furia_roja_by_aminecube-d2yyv8x.jpg

I'm thinking the Right back and striker are going to be the toughest decisions Del Bosque has to make. The former because of too much talent, and the latter because they don't have a proven system-centric striker.

My starting IX
--------------------
-------------------------Casillas-------------------------
Azpilicueta-----Pique---------Ramos----------Alba
--------Javi Martinez------------Xabi Alonso--------
---------------------------Xavi---------------------------
------------Iniesta--------------------Silva-------------
--------------------------Costa--------------------------

Although I'd prefer they didn't play the doblé pivoté, I know they will.

Winner: If I couldn't choose Spain to take the trophy, I'd have to say the Germans look primed to win it all.

Golden Ball: Andres Iniesta or Bastian Schweinsteiger
Golden Boot: Luis Suarez (he is on fire and it will continue)
Golden Glove: Casillas or Courtois
Dark Horse: Belgium for sure

Going to watch round of 16 match in Fortaleza that Spain would play in if they win their group. Fingers crossed!!!!:teeth

I wish I had enough knowledge to fill out the prediction categories.

I have liked the Netherlands for a while, although I disliked their "dirty" play last time around. Still will be rooting for them.

Darkhorse? Agree on Belgium, although the loss of Christian Benteke is a shame, and dents their chances.

Golden Ball? No idea.

Golden Boot? Agree on Suarez.

Glove? No idea.

Non-power teams that I will keep an eye on (not just because they are good, but for stylistic reasons):

Korea, all of Group C (minus Greece), Belgium, Ghana, Chile, Croatia.

Who's your team?

US, and I can say that we are fucked. Germany, Portugal, and FUCKING GHANA :mad

What starting IX do you want them to use?

I really have no idea what lineup Klinssy will send out, either. Altidore's been truly awful since the bad decision to go to Sunderland, Johnasson has been scoring and creating with AZ and I think he's a better option at striker right now. I really hope Wondolowski makes the cut, he's one of the best poachers we've got.

Who's your pick to win it?

Germany has to be a favorite.

Dark horse?

Netherlands. You wanna bet against Robben?

Golden Ball?

Neymar

Golden Boot?

Messi. Argentina is gonna score a ton of goals in group play.

Golden Glove?

Buffon!

Are you going?

I wish.

Sucks for the USMNT, Game 1 is going to make or break the Cup for them. They have to beat Ghana and earn 3 points. I think they can get through with a W and then two draws with Portugal/Germany.

Yeah, poor U.S. A brutal group, and yes, Ghana, fuccccccckkkkkkk.

I would bet against Robben though; maybe I don't follow quite enough, but he seems overrated, with a history of disappearing in internationals. I just read a prediction that had Argentina winning it all.

Hard to answer a lot of these questions until I see the players from each team.

1. USA and Spain.
2. No idea on either. Although I ahve a few people I'm hoping to see play for both.
3. Germany or belgium.
4. Colombia
5. Iniesta
6. Messi
7. Howard
8. Nope. Would love to but can't afford.

As for our USA group. WE beat portugal alst tiem we played. Ronaldo is onjured right now and it hopefully stays that way. We beat germany last time we played them too. WE can do it again and tehre are times where we play like the best people on the planet. Need to to get that W against Ghana though. If we can't do that then we don't make it to 16.

I wouldn't write off the US so quickly. Even with a lack of cohesiveness, they are American and can easily say "fuck it" and put together some gritty performances agains Ghana and Portugal. Ronaldo is hobbling into this tournament, and Portugal is getting old in general. Ghana is due a loss to the US finally.

As for Argentina, yeah, they have a cake walk of a group, but that doesn't usually bode well for teams once the second phase of tournaments begin. I see Messi scoring a ton, but he is going to share some of that with Higuain and Di Maria. I don't see them winning it sheerly because of their defensive limitations. Same goes for Chile. And Chile losing Vidal was a huge blow. Now they don't have the midfield talent to protect their awful defense and average keeper. They are going to need to score 3 goals per game just to win their group. Not happening against Holland and Spain.

Oh, and I bet against Robben any chance I get. :twofinger.

Hard for me to see Belgium as a legitimate contender at this point (even with Benteke, I thought they were a darkhorse).

[*]What starting IX do you want them to use?

I thought soccer teams had 11, not 9? Or are the goalie + one other considered as "givens" that don't even need to be specified?

anyone going to the friendly at the 'stick against azerbaijan? I was thinking of checking it out.

-USA and Germany
-don't know...I leave it up to the experts.
-Brazil
-Germany (not really dark, but whatevs they haven't won in a while)
-i don't know...let's say Schweinsteiger
-Robben
-Let's go crazy: Neuer
-No but a colleague is, with 3 friends. I don't even know if they've been told which games they got yet either.

I hope the times are more conducive to the western US time zone, those 7am games during the last WC were way too hard on me.....

Who's your team?
USA. also like to watch England

What starting IX do you want them to use?
Can't say, really. The core 7 is pretty obvious and their depth in the middle is laudable. Their back and strikers only have a few givens and I think that's where the most difficult questions will come. I'm skeptical of them keeping the 18 yr old Green on the roster but it'll probably happen. Same with Diskerud, but at least I think he's worked for it and not getting it just on "potential".

Who's your pick to win it?
Brazil (home field will help them a lot, i think)

Dark horse?
Coatia (maybe not to win, but to make noise and possibly get to the final 8)

Golden Ball?
want to say CR7 but I don't think Port will get past group play and that will hurt his chances.

Golden Boot?
Messi

Golden Glove?
Howard (homer pick. US has always had outstanding goalies)

Are you going?
Dream On

If you go to the Groups Page on the FIFA site, click on each team and then select "change to my time"

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/groups/index.html

looks like PST game times will be 1500 v Ghana, 1500 v Port, 0900 v Germany assuming their web script worked as intended. It shows the local time where the game will be but I'm too lazy to do it manually.

  • Who's your team? Belgium, Spain, and the US.
  • What starting XI do you want them to use?
  • Who's your pick to win it? Brazil - home team for the win
  • Dark horse? Belgium
  • Golden Ball? Vincent Kompany
  • Golden Boot? Pedro Rodríguez
  • Golden Glove? Howard or Iker
  • Are you going? Not this time (attended USA '94 and Spain '82)
