First Costco in China opens, opening day what could go wrong?

For $60/yr, we're buying gasoline, bottled water, coffee beans, cereal, electronics at a lower price. Saved lots of money on an air purifier/fan this yr. You're buying convenience with that membership.

I'm with Agent Orange, just need to know the best times to go to your go-to store. I like to hit stores early anyway.

Go for the hot dogs, stay for the assorted electronics, jewelry, and sunglasses.

Don’t forget the meats. Best place to get prime cuts. Often the prime is the same price or even cheaper than choice at my neighborhood Raley’s.

Yup, we throw the raw chicken meat we can't eat in one sitting into the freezer. Buying in bulk is not a downside

Any onsite manager familiar with Chinese culture could have easily foreseen this. They should have worked with the police to meter the number of customers in the store instead of release the hordes.

Historical observation that in China if you don't push/rush/fight to get 'yours' it will be gone forever. Maybe a byproduct of the early Communist years.

Not sure if Communist or a consequence of growing up eating family style.

If you're not fast and aggressive you don't get anything to eat.

Waiting 10-15 minutes in line to get cheaper Costco gas is weird to me. My time is worth more than that savings. I'd rather pay a little more at Chevron or Shell or wherever and just be in and out in 2 minutes.

You can open an account and add your housemate to split the mbrshp fee and save money on other stuff and choose not to buy gasoline there ...

Costco purposely pairs their low prices with horrendous shopping conditions, because their highest margin customers are those that have membership, but almost never shop there.

My favorite Costco experience was when I bought patio furniture there. It was then that I realized that unlike any other furniture vendor - where you would normally buy the goods and then drive out back for loading - Costco actually expects you to bring every piece of furniture through the register. It's an impossible experience unless you bring about 5 friends to help out.

It doesn't make sense until you realize that Costco doesn't actually want you to buy any of the furniture, they just want you to think that someday, you might buy the furniture, because it's such a damn good deal.

I worked at Costco for a few years 10+ years ago and an older forklift driver was telling me they back in the day, Costco employees didn’t really help anyone load their cart or car. People would bring their own help.

Mexico Costco is my best Costco experience. Super chill and more calm than I ever thought a Costco could be.

(Plus they have a jalapeno grinder for the hot dogs out front.)

I nearly want to take my post back.. that there is no point in going to Costco--because-- actually the gas savings alone are quite a lot.

However,.. some of the food may still spoil. (nor do I eat the cereal from there)

.. Costco gas has another problem, which is no air for tires and no squeegee for the windshield. Just for folks to be aware

... One of those is however not an issue for many drivers.. never pump their tires ..*LOL" :laughing .. however for our discerning Barf car owner, one probably insists on pumping the tires every now and then !

deconstructing this a bit...

Gas - it's a bit cheaper, if you place no value on your time.

Bottled water - waste of money, a scourge to the environment. You're contributing to the destruction of the world by buying it. If you can't handle the taste of tap, buy a brita.

Coffee beans - Good coffee beans are freshly roasted. Bulk coffee purchases mean you're drinking old, stale coffee.

Cereal - processed junk food that is bad for you. Generally old and stale, bad for your digestion.

Electronics - just as cheap to buy online.

You do realize that tap water won't help for your bug out survival system, right?

How else you gonna know you need 48 AA batteries unless you walk the isle and see them sitting there smiling at you.

I have enough water in my hot water heater to last the GF and I a month, and I can't carry more than a few gallons if I need to leave the house anyways. Enough random jugs and bottles around to easily hold more water than I can carry.

Little tiny plastic bottles is a pretty inefficient way to store water anyways.

Fiji water is delicious and comes in square bottles that stack pretty nicely. :D

And just to rub it in, we buy paper towels in bulk which kills trees faster because I'm too lazy to reuse old rags or wait for laundry to complete its cleaning and drying cycles.

One stop shopping. Shopping needed to be done anyway. Very convenient. Saves money $$$ and saves time by saving you several trips to the supermarket. Alternative analysis.

Tip: Consume more mercury if you want to die earlier

I'm only a Costco member because getting medication from Costco (WITHOUT insurance) is cheaper than my co-pay (WITH insurance) at Walgreens. Go figure.

You guys wait a long time for gas. I rarely ever have to wait more than 5 minutes. I rarely ever buy gas anymore though.
