First track day - best times?

I have seen one guy do that. It's not a common thing. I suspect the guy is a motocross racer, by the way. Just a guess.

Very true, not that common. Last year we had a little kid called Ryan Fulton come out with us and on his second trackdays Michael had him running 1:58's. Ryan is that kid on the back that did the double elbow drag with Michael in turn 2.

Thanks Ken for the defense. Cody is his name, and he's a friend of mine (actually wore my leathers). I agree with everyone that it is hard to believe, because a) we couldn't have done it, and b) we haven't seen people go that quick on a first track day. I would guess that even experienced racers would have trouble taking a stock R1 with worn tires and do a 1:59 (I know I'd have trouble!)

He definately wants to get out and race, but money is always an issue. Hopefully he can sort something out - at the very least, he can use my leathers!

Tell him to sell the street bike as is and buy a race prepped bike. At 140 lbs he would do well on just about any size bike.

It is really kewl that you posted this for your friend. If he had posted it for himself he would have been so flamed by the peanut gallery that he would have been a pile of char by the end of the 1st page.

It is fun to see natural talent pop out of the wood work, even funnier to watch the egos of the guys that just don't have the natural talent squirm. :p

It was really awesome for Ken to post up how well the guy responded to his instruction. One of the big keys to dropping time and being a better rider is to be able to apply class instruction to the track consistently.

I don't have natural talent but I love it so much that I keep coming back for more shits and grins.

Racing can be VERY expensive but if he wants to do it, it would be best for him to do it while his natural talent is in its prime! Send a PM to Holeshot and find out what it would take to get sponsored by BARF racing.

Very true. Those 1000 can get you in a bunch of trouble out on the street. I would say sell the R1 and call our friend Alex. He ownes a salvage yard and we all get our race bikes from him. Most of the bikes he has are 07-08 or newer and depending on the bike you could probably pick one up for about $5500. If anyone is interested you can call him at (916) 910-5041.

Just curious, what time is consider fast for racer? (I know 1:59 is super-fast for a street rider) and secondly what time could someone like Rossi/Stonder/Pedrosa do on a Moto GP bike, interested to see if there is a siginficant difference between those two times.

Be gental,

TT

+1... as I am not in the track scene and dont know these tracks you could say you ran a 1:30 and if I hadnt read this thread I'd say "cool".

Just curious how that compares to an AFM racer and a MotoGP podium racer.

I think FP is doing high 1:40s like 48s and 49s. Hell at a regualr trackday under 2:10 is faster than 90% of the riders out there. Sub 2 mins is fucking moving!

FP?

Thats quick! Didnt expect that much difference, 20 seconds+- from a pro racer and a decent track day rider.

Sears Point for example, AMA lap record there is 1:35:XX I believe, AFM FP guys run 1:38/9s there. And if you are under 2:00 at a track day thats a pretty good pace

As another metric, I know the motoGP bikes are a few seconds faster than that AMA bikes at laguna. (low 1:20s vs mid 1:20s)

So if MotoGP bikes did do a race at Thill..I imagine lap times in the low 1:40s. All speculation of course

FP=Formula Pacific, the AFMs fastest class

I think motogp would do lower than 40s at t-hill just because it's a lot faster than laguna, maybe mid-high 30s

I didn't mean it as a slight to whomever this person is when I said...

1:59 is faster than I went at the last AFM races. I was offering perspective. :laughing

Triple Threat - a 1:59 would put him finishing about 18th at the last T Hill AFM race - about mid pack, or a little ahead of mid pack. But don't forget that most AFMers have race set up bikes, and brand new tires...

The lap record, as I've been told, is around 1:47. I would guess that Rossi, on a MotoGP bike, would be 1:40 - 1:45 as a guess.

At Laguna, AMA bikes ran a 1:23.1, and motoGP ran a 1:21.4 (just to give you a comparison)

1:59 would get him top novice - I'm a rookie on old tires and a stock bike...1:59 is moving!

I would say under 2 minutes is the fast mark. Once you dip below that your fast, but you have to be able to do them consistently

My first time to t hill (3rd trackday) i put up some 2:12-13's. I crashed at infineon the next month, i went back to t-hill last month and couldn't get under 2:15's. Still think i am doing pretty good i would like to eventually like to be able to keep up with max (daredevil):laughing
I had some trouble keeping my confidence up which i think slowed me down a bit, plus i hadn't rode in 7 months. Crashing hurts more then you body and check book, hurts your confidence.

Sounds like it's about a 2 - 5 second difference dependnig on the track, which is some ways is significant, but given the cost of the bikes, it's not a world of difference.

Who knows how well a good AMF racer would do on a one-off million dollar factory race bike. Especially given that some Moto GP riders are 2+ seconds off the pace of the Rossi pace as it is. Makes you want to go hmmmmm.

Great information, thanks.

I've been trying to keep up with that fast bastard too, he keeps getting faster and I hit a massive streak of slow :rofl

Stan23 1:59 is fast. Most guys never see those numbers even with years of track days. There is a very large difference between 2:01 and 1:59 also. Doesn't seem like it but it is. Once times get down to say 2:05's especially on 600s and SV's there are usually very few places to really pick up a ton of time. I'm on an older F4I and still have yet to see a sub 2:00 lap time after years of riding. To put it simply that kid is fast even if hes on a 1000 that's fast.
