The French military is seriously underestimated. And the Dassault Rafale is probably the best fighter in the air today.

EDIT: It doesn't sound like they are threatening a unilateral strike on Syria. If Syria is laughing for any reason, it's because they know that they can dance over the "red line" without any consequence because everyone else is too scared of riling up Russia, China, Iran, or Hezbollah.

F22 is operational, isn't it? Also, without seriously looking into it, it seems like a Russian fighter, the Typhoon, etc. outclass the Rafale.

If you do a little search, you'll see it's a great pissing contest, and each platform has advantages, but they are comparable. The major advantage of the F22 is stealth.

I imagine it would be a monster pissing contest. I am an amateur military buff, and it seems to me that the F-22 is absolutely dominant. I remember reading some simulation in which they completely crushed a squadron of F15s (maybe F18s). Now, VALUE might be a different story.
 
Sorry to threadjack. F22 has the potential, but it's not a fully developed platform, and the teething problems are significant. I agree that it wins the air superiority contest, even though it can't be expected to beat the Rafale in a dogfight. In terms of value, who was it that said, "quantity has a quality of its own?"

LOL, I also apologize for being an accessory to the threadjack. The huge advantage of the F22 is beyond visual range, where it seems to be invisible to radar. Dogfights, a la WW2, are gone.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

Your point about dogfighting is well taken, but wouldn't those maneuverability characteristics be excellent for attack and support roles? Especially good for the Rafale is the increased payload at the cost of stealth.

Anyway, I still think the French military gets all sorts of ridicule, but people just aren't familiar with their size, capabilities, and military investment.
 
France is to be feared. In the Invasion of North Africa during WWII thousands of Americans were killed by French soldiers while their leaders played games back and forth on surrendering or not surrendering. French leadership is unique, like polio or bubonic plague.

Yeah, agreed, and I do it myself (make fun of the French, especially their military capabilities). But, their equipment is world class, and I would guess that their training is excellent as well (since they are part of NATO, train with other western militaries, etc.).

Syria's army is in disarray. The French should crush.

Their recent history was pretty weak. Mindless use of soldiers as cannon fodder in WW1 (joined by others though), complete incompetence in WW2 and in French Indochina.

I guess you could argue they did well in Mali recently.

Well so, they've sucked spectacularly for the last 150 years or so. We can be a little more fair, it's mainly just the inconsequential pissing matches known as WW1 and WW2. :laughing

For me at least, what is funny in joking about France's military performance is that they are (obviously) a rich, developed country, and SHOULD be awesome. But, the habit of the French to be incompetent (Maginot is just the easiest example) is what is funny. There isn't much to be made fun of when a poor, untrained army gets its ass kicked, but when it's a rich country with a long military history, well, THAT is funny.
 
The French Foreign Legion are a pack of hard-ass, nasty, tough motherfuckers too.
