Yo, Kevin. I respect your opinion 99% of the time but I gotta tell you... reality TV is not all "fake" in a sort of universal way. There are varying degrees of fakery. Basically the producer of the show is tasked with finding an optimal cost/drama arrangement. Are the people on Kitchen Nightmares actors? No, they're real people. Are they following a script? No, they're not. I can say that with 100% certainty because it costs a fuckload of money to hire actors and writers. Reality TV exists because it's
cheap and a show that takes no money to produce yet pulls in the fucking ratings like Honey Boo Boo is what studios want.
So here's the breakdown of what
is fake in this show:
It's edited in a way that can re-contextualize what people say
It's chopped together so people sound much more spastic when they're arguing
Gordon Ramsay (who is actually a pretty nice guy) is encouraged to yell and throw fits to antagonize restaurant owners
The "customers" are there at the discretion of the production team
Going over the top to like... pay these people to act crazy is just defying the rules of reality TV. Total nutcases are out there and they don't need to be paid to do what comes naturally
Oh and I know all of this because my sister-in-law used to work as a reality TV producer.
