My GP100 was my first handgun, it's my best revolver, I can't say enough about it. Great and fun shooter.

haha, the Tarus Judge or the S&W Govenor. No on both counts. I've head they are illegal in CA and need to have the rifling removed to be legal. regardless, those guns are retarded and good for shooting snakes and that's about it.
I've got a real shotgun for larger problems.

I have that exact revolver myself. Bought it in 83.
My advice, FWIW, is to get a 4" .357, that way you can shoot 38Spl too and ammo is abundant.
Personally, I believe in bigger is better and don't forget the mission, so to that end I like bigger bullets. Not magnums, just bigger - much bigger.
44Spl or 45Colt or 45acp.
They make revolver in these calibers, but they ain't cheap.
Neither is the ammo - save for the acp.
Not a beginner's piece by a long shot, but certainly one of the most effective SD choices.
Here's a 44Spl.
Ooooo, big holes...
This is more in your wheelhouse, a pre-lock S&W Model 13, it's a 4" fixed sights .357.

Colt Python.

IMO, get a Smith and Wesson Model 66, 4" barrel. I have the second gen, circa 1981 and it's an amazing revolver. The trigger is as good as a Performance Center Smith and they just don't put the effort into the fit and finish in new guns without charging the big bucks.

This IMO, is the perfect revolver. Relatively light (not too light, it's a .357 afterall), stainless, adjustable rear sight, bead blasted top strap, grooved grips in front and rear. I paid a little on the high end for mine (~$600).
My roommate has a pristine 6" Colt Python (blued) too, very accurate and is a work of art. The stock trigger is a bit heavy and stacks at the end of the pull though.
Go big, or go home!

skip the 500 and go for the .460 its a stouter gun and you can choose your hot sauce. 45lc, 454, or flame away with the .460
I had the 460V and loved it. traded it for a nightforce scope![]()
