RE Clayton to Oakland

You can complete the loop by going around the Briones Reservoir, then skirt Martinez and Walnut Creek to Ignacio Valley Road and Clayton. Sunol makes a good lunch stop if you're running clockwise.

Did this route on Thursday Augtust 25 with two co workers. We stopped in Middletown for lunch at Perry's deli and gased up, food was great by the way. The ride from Calistoga to Middletown was pretty nice especially with all the newly paved roads but experience little traffic since we went on a Thursday. Had to watch out for spots of gravel from the construction trucks working on the roads. Other than the traffic the whole ride was awesome.

I did this quick loop early this morning (6:39am). It was nice to have some straight sections with the 954 i just picked up. Then coming down Metcalf you pass the dirt bike track and can see South San Jose. There was heavy fog this morning, so be sure to throw on a extra t shirt.:ride

Calaveras Road Closure

Maybe you know this already, but there’s an article in the 16 September 2011 SF Chronicle about a new dam being built at Calaveras Reservoir (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/09/16/MNA31L2NBQ.DTL). I was down there last week and I wondered what was going on with the big trucks and what looked like a staging area. Turns out that a new dam is being built just below the old one, which is earthquake vulnerable.

So ... for the next 4 or 5 years there’s going to be lots of traffic on the road, including commuting workers and big tractor-trailers hauling dirt and equipment. And closures.

The Alameda County section will be closed weekdays for a while (slackers beware). This is from the web page for the project (http://sfwater.org/bids/projectDetail.aspx?prj_id=141):

As part of the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project, we will temporarily close Calaveras Road on weekdays just south of the entrance to Sunol Ohlone Wilderness (Geary Road) to the Alameda / Santa Clara County border on two separate occasions. Tentative schedule is:

• 2 months in late 2011
• 18 months in late 2012/early 2013

Other details:

• Calaveras Road will be open on weekends at all times.
• The road closes at midnight on Sundays and opens on Saturdays at 6:00 a.m.
• The road will be swept clean of debris prior to opening.
• Emergency vehicles will have access to the road at all times.
• Access to the Sunol Ohlone Wilderness will remain open from the north at all times. From the south on weekends only.

As part of the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project, we will temporarily close Calaveras Road on weekdays just south of the entrance to Sunol Ohlone Wilderness (Geary Road) to the Alameda / Santa Clara County border on two separate occasions.

Wow, I hadn't heard. Thanks for the heads up. I just started taking that road home from work earlier this year on the rare day I ride to work. I guess that'll spoil my fun for a while. :rolleyes

Los Altos

This is my newbie ride. Starts in Los Altos->Foothill Exp->Stevens Canyon->Mount Eden->9->Skyline->La Honda->Sandhill->280 back to where you started. 45 mi, takes about 1.5 hours for me going at speed limit.

Other than the traffic the whole ride was awesome.

did this route today. thanks :thumbup

good rides and good info.

If someone has one handy... what's a good way to get to berryessa from Davis w minimal freeway time and good backroads? thanks in advance
