Group Ride Routes & Maps

Be aware that damage from the 2016-17 rainy winter has closed some of our favorite roads in the hills around the bay (35, Redwood Rd, Palomares Rd, Calaveras Rd, etc.). You should check these routes before riding them. You can find the closures by trying to copy the routes on Google yourself; it will not let you map a closed road. You can also search for the road name and "closure".

No, it isn't the best way, as far as I'm concerned.

You need to break your addiction to Google. Come over to the bright side of GPX files in a dedicated GPX player. There are motorcycle specific players from Garmin and TomTom, and there are iPhone players such as InRoute.

You can layout a route on Google Maps but then you have to convert it to GPX with the Maps to GPX program (which is wonderful). Then you have to load the GPX file it creates into your GPX player.

Why go to all this trouble? Because Google Maps is an advertising medium, not a travel app! It often changes your route when you run it, sending you onto freeways and heavily trafficked roads that are lined by businesses that have bought ads in Google Maps. It won't be faithful to your route.

I like Maps to GPX. It's a free Windows program that accurately, reliably creates a GPX file from a Google Maps link.
