I poked around & couldn't find a thread on this, so...

I am planning on picking up GTA IV + Xbox 360 with my "economic stimulus check":rolleyes in the next week or two. When I went on Amazon to check out the Xbox Elite package, I noticed a lot of negatives with regard to the infamous "red ring of death," even on systems bought as recently as last month (with the new "Falcon" chipset).

So, I'm polling you Xbox 360'ers-

Had any issues with your Xbox since you got it? Had to replace it or send it in for service?
I'm just wondering how widespread their hardware problems are.
In other words: is it "Windows NT" buggy or "Windows Vista" buggy?

NOTE: This is NOT a Xbox vs Playstation 3 vs Wii thread. Don't start that shit in here or I'll roll up on ya in my Prius and bus' a cap in yo ass. :troy

I have been through 3 360's but once I got the elite with the falcon chip set not even a hiccup. It is also SOOO much quieter that my roommates older elite.

What had happened was there where 3 manufactures of the 360
Well one plant was given incorrect blue prints for the electronics and thus the epic failure amount
I got mine in December so I am no problems and mine is much quieter than the original ones as well

I am so tempted to do what you're doing, but I'm holding out for the third quarter price drop and picking up GTA used, along with some other USED games. I'm cheap when it comes to gaming, almost all my games are used and as long as there are games out there that I'm interested in and haven't played yet, I'm happy with my PS2 and Xbox.

If that were the case, I would imagine that MS would have gotten the "proper" blueprints/firmware to the manufacturer ASAP and corrected the issue. However, the fact that the RRoD is still appearing on brand new consoles shipped as recently as last month debunks this theory.

Had mine pretty much since it came out and its worked fine the entire time.

I've had no hardware issues. Have had mine for (I think) 2 years. But I don't play it a lot...I'm mostly a PC gamer guy.

My brothers died in a fire (literally) he was playing, it started smoking and it died. MS replaced it and the second one has been just fine and that was shortly after it came out. The first one died within weeks of purchase.

I've had mine since Octoberish of last year and have had no problems. :thumbup

This was the story passed from Microsoft rep so I took it as fact
Maybe they where just making excuses to not put the blame on their company

the only issue i've had was a few disk read errors randomly , I have an OG 360

it seems if you mention anything relating to video games on this site it will turn into a ps3 vs 360 disscusion/argument.

my og 360 was fine for a few months then i got rrod, i saw a fix online of wrapping it in a toowel for a while and it actually worked. for another month. it got repaired and all was good untill it got stolen. my new elite model(non falcon) is working fine. i havent used it nearly as much as i did my og system so that may be a factor.

I leave mine on all the time , I guess i've been lucky. I have it linked to my PC media server to shuffle music(tversity)

I also use it to warm my room in the winter :laughing

Had mine over a year with no problems. But two of my coworkers have had problems, one had his Xbox die, the other had the power supply die. And damn those power supplies are expensive.

Ours got the red ring of death but we sent it off to get it fixed and it's been working perfectly fine. :)

Red ring of death = minor inconvenience

I love that MSFT managed to invent both the blue screen of death and the red ring of death :rofl

:rofl Good point Alex.

I've had mine for a year and a half with no problems. Goddamn you, now it's going to die next week. :laughing I've heard part of it can be heat issues, so I run mine sitting on a mesh shoe rack - power supply and box are completely off the ground and able to be cooled in all directions. Not that it's a guaranteed way of avoiding the red ring of death, but may be something to consider. It runs fairly hot and before the current set up it would feel uncomfortably warm after sitting on the carpet for an hour.

I bought mine from a kid off craigslist. After about 6 months the power supply failed, but microsoft covered it under warranty. I think the kid had one of those intercooler fans that was over drawing on the PSU. I'm looking forward to the day that it red rings so I can get a newer, quieter one. Otherwise, I love it. Hacked firmware FTW!

Steve

i think its good of microsoft to extend warrenties as a reaction to the problem they have been having. i like it when companies back thier products.

the story about canon is even better

I had a day 1 360.

Had it Red ring on me about a year later. MSFT took care of me paid for shipping both ways I had another one in about 4 days as well as a 1 month free for xbox live
