i got my 360 a year ago before the new chipset. i've had issues of games crashing here and there, but never had red rings. it's been fine lately though, especially gta4 no problems so far

I've had one RRoD, and was replaced with a new one fairly promptly (less then one month total turn around) under the new 3-year warranty. I have to give Microsoft props for choosing to actually address the issue. My new one is not a Falcon chipset one, which is too bad. If you can get a Falcon chipset one, do that. They don't appear to RRoD nearly as often.

Had mine over a year with no problems. But two of my coworkers have had problems, one had his Xbox die, the other had the power supply die. And damn those power supplies are expensive.

Power supply in my Xbox1 died then caught on fire while I was playing ikaruga :shocker

I got a 6$ replacement and a 11$ mod chip , slapped a 500GB HD in it now its my movie/emulation box :thumbup

My brother has had 4 Xbox 360's get the red ring of death.. after the last one was replaced it played for a while then traded it in for a PS3 cause he was tired of the hassle...

Launch day 360, no red rings.

Now that was a dumb thing for me to say while playing GTA4 ... pleasedon'tjinxpleasedon'tjinx :cry :laughing

Quick question for you.. do you watch a lot of DVD's on it?

My brother watches TONS of DVD's and he thinks that's the cause of the RED RING...

RROD is caused by a faulty xclamp on the motherboard. The board warps under heat and breaks the solder joints, causing the console to RROD. Some consoles don't experience the warping to a degree high enough to break the solder joints, others do. Some company estimated about ~1/8 of all xbox 360 consoles experience the problem. There is a separate RROD issue regarding the video card, but it is much rarer and not covered under M$'s 3 year warranty.

So maybe my shoe-rack idea IS what's keeping it alive! :laughing

Nope. I've used it as a DVD player once, maybe twice in the last year and change. Before that, maybe once every week or two on average.

I did get the bad disk drive for the Xbox tho :(
Replaced it myself with the best one and never had any more problems

Great thread because my xbox just started freezing up and now we have to send it back. 1 year 6 mos. old.

I have a question out of general curiosity
When you send the systems in do you keep your HD with you or send that as part of the system?
It would just suck if they replace your Xbox and you loose all your saved stuff :(

I got mine the first day it came out, that gave me the RRoD after a year, went to costco got a credit and got me a new elite one by shelling some more money. Unfortunately that is not the falcon chipset. It has worked like a champ, I have played it daily for at least 2 hours and as much as 8-10 hours on weekends :D. However, I use it solely for gaming, no movie watching on it. There is a huge difference when you go the HDMI route on elite vs the regular component cables. Now only if my TV could die and I can upgrade to 1080DPI :rofl.

Microsoft in beginning was not refunding the content that you lost as it was tied up to hardware serial number.

I heard they did however start giving customers xbox live credit for free downloads so that they can get all the older stuff back.

What sucks is that you do loose all your saved games :(, I had to do NFS Most wanted again to get all the cars unlocked.

whats the difference? cause i never noticed one, other than my dvds were now upconverted to hd(poorly). other than that the picture seems the same. :shrug

The current SKU lineups all use the "falcon" chipsets which bring the failure rate to around average of any other electronic device. < This is the right answer.

I haven't watched movies on Xbox, just games, the picture quality is a whole lot different when playing games with HD cable hookup. For instance Need for Speed was so much more fun with HD hookups, I could see so much more details (may be cuz the picture was more clear :dunno)

Bottom line: I could tell the difference when I switched from component hookup to HD hookup during game play.
