You might have seen the for sale sign already, but if you didn't, then just to fill you in, my 848 went up against a deer and the deer won. My insurance is totaling the bike. Now the dilemma. When I bought my 848 I got a really good deal on it. So good that even the same dealer that I bought it at doesn't want to give me another at that price.

The price that 848's are going for now is creeping pretty close to 1098 territory. I'm already out a couple hundred bucks because my insurance gave me fair market value and not what I actually paid, plus my deductible. Also with the mark up that 848's have now, do you guys think its worth it to bite the bullet and buy another 848 or pay a little more and get the 1098? Thoughts? What would you do? (you can't say I'd buy a CBR and pocket the difference)

I'd buy a CBR and upgrade the bike with the difference :)

Follow your heart and pay the cost. Better to be broke than living with regret.

Get exactly what you want even if it means waiting a bit. It sucks to get something 'because it's a bit cheaper and will be enough' when you really want something else.

Ya, but isn't the 1098 just an 848 that pulls harder? I wouldn't be tracking it so that won't be a problem, but I don't want something that is going to be uncontrollable in the twisties or be fast in the straights but too heavy to flick around (like a busa). Any 1098 owners chime in?

I have no clue as to who pulls what, I'm just here to cheer you on and help nudge you in the direction you want:thumbup

From what I've read, the 848 is the hottest bike in the Ducati stable right now, so premium you will be paying. Get the 1098 and control your wrist. Go to the Ducati web site and do a comparo. You will see that the 1098 only weighs 11 lbs. more but has 26 more hp and 20 more lbs-ft of torque. The seat of the 1098 is also lower by 10mm. The 1098 is the bike I would get if the price difference is close.

the 848 uses newer technology in the creation of its frame and engine to my knowledge.
The 848 also has less reciprocating mass in the engine which should mean less gyroscopic effect meaning it should flick about with greater ease.
Do you want a bike that hits 180 faster or a bike that flicks through turns faster?

Unless he's Valentino Rossi, I don't think he'll mind (or notice) the pig with more reciprocating mass, that is the 1098. :twofinger

You may as well get the 1098. That way you can have the best of both worlds; flickable, and lots of power.

Good luck.

Whatchgonna do with the 848?
Insurance "totalled" and actual totalled aren't necessarilly the same thing....

I prefer smaller sized bikes just because im more into turning than raw hp. If 848's and 1098's were the same price i would go for the 848, in white of course.

Are there any rumors of an 848R or anything like that coming out? Maybe if you waited a bit you could get your hands on a brand new version of your old bike.

Used 1098 or 1098s would be my vote.

The suspension is better on the 1098, and the handling is great on either.

i personally would jump at a 1098 or used 1098s. however if you felt the 848 was good for you than just grab another one. i just prefer the dry cluth haha anyways good luck...its like choosing between a ferrari and....well a ferrari, so you cant go wrong.

How important is it to buy new? There are several ducati forums where "used" 848's and 1098's are going for sale. I can't vouge for the reputation of the sellers, but they seem to be honest and people with high post counts, you can probably "trust" more. Example of what I think is an awesome deal:

Says "race-ready" and you might say, I don't want it for racing, but it's got quite a bit on it. Unfortunately apparently the OEM plastics are not available, but 318 miles, full termi's and all the other goodies, makes it appealing. There are also 1098's fully set up with after market pieces/parts going for a good price with very low miles.

here's my favorite, if I had to do it again and someone told me to wait:

Just my :2cents

Insurance is cutting me a check and I think I'm going to sell the salvage 848 to Monroe and try to cover a bit of the deductible and loss of value cost. I'm losing a few hundred from what I paid to what insurance is giving me but I didn't have a loan so I'm not losing anything to a bank.

I don't care much for straight line power because I know that once a turn comes along, how many ponies you have (usually) doesn't make a difference. It just hurts to pay $500 more for what I had and not get any sort of upgrade or pay $1000 more and get a HUGE upgrade. I guess I'll go test ride the 1098 tomorrow.

Have you looked into insurance costs for the 1098?

HAHA good point. Though it wasn't TOO bad for the 848. I can't imagine it being a whole lot more, but who knows with insurance companies.
