help with diet/exercise planning

Cheerios is sugar and wheat. NONE of the cereals in Safeway (NONE) have no added sugar. Read all labels before you buy. Half of them say "organic light healthy added good range grown lose weight low fat" and they all have sugar added. Throw out the cheerios and bran flakes and find non sugar added cereals (which you won't find in the 100 plus cereals at Safeway)

Whole wheat bread is another big hype. READ THE LABELS. 90% of them are sugar added, partially hydrogenated oil etc. The ONLY commercial whole wheat bread I eat or recommend is Orowheat "winter wheat", it is good stuff and has more fiber than any other bread out there.

Try some health food store Muesli, which is whole grain/nuts/pieces of fruit.

you think trade joes would have the good kind of cereal?

I always thought bran flakes were good for you... damn thanks for the info:thumbup

I cut carbs entirely back when I was in high school, that was horrible. I was always tired and I felt weak.

I hope I can keep the weight off this time. I am always rebounding weight, I weighed 225lbs in january due to large consumption of beer and pizza, and lack of exercise. Started hitting the gym and was down to 205lbs by march. Then late june I went to cancun for a week and ate just about everything and drank large amounts of alcohol....again:laughing and weighed in at 210.

I'm glad that my body can lose weight fast:thumbup

only problem is getting lazy and slowly gain it back

Red Wine instead of beer if you drink. Other wise, cut out the booze. It is hard for me to loose! Cancun, did you snorkle or surf? I would love to check it out one of these day. I think I am headed for Jamaca soon. :) I would try Special K cereal. It tastes good and is good for you. Also the Chex.

the waves were too tame for surfing. I mainly got piss drunk about every day and lounged in the pool

Only water activities I did was boogie boarding and I rented a jet ski. oh I also did pool volley ball :)

2. don't eat after 7pm

I'd have to disagree. Your body doesn't have a specific clock attached to it. Not eating after 7pm is tough for many people. It depends on WHAT you eat at night, not if you eat.

First, diets don't work. They never will. Eating right consistently is what would work (meaning doing it for months, even years).

My daily meal plan is to eat 6 times a day; small portioned amounts. For one day of the week, I splurge on anything from pizza to burritos to whatever.

Drink plenty of water.

Get 8-9 hours of sleep.

Exercise regularly (Cardio + Weight Lifting).

I was around 155 two months ago, now I'm down to 145. Doesn't seem like much but I toned up a good amount; I don't want to be skinny anyways.

If you want a more detailed plan, PM me and I'll make one for you. I've helped most of my friends and its worked out pretty well for them.

dude, just take up boxing or mma you'll drop pounds in a heartbeat. as for the mexican food, real mexican food is great: frijoles de olla, rice, real tacos (not the fried shit but "soft" tacos with carne asada or grilled chicken or pan fried beef and chicken), tamales.

get in touch with your roots ese and in no time, you'll be doing this to glass jawed puertoricans :laughing

My diet and exercise program is working great for me. I have lost 7lbs since the time of my original post. I am now at 200lbs I only have 20 more to go:thumbup
I notice the love handles are starting to get smaller:laughing and I had to tighten the waist adjustment on my leather jacket.

Is it healthy to be losing about 7-8 lbs in 2 weeks? I seem to be losing it at a steady gradual pace.

Diets do suck.
About acouple of months ago I changed up my diet with the idea of more water and lighter meals through the day.
In my three meals I have before dinner I have cliff bars, yogurt, fruit and these Fiber bars from Gnu. If I have leftovers from the lastnight I'll throw that in the mix too.
If I want to drink something sweet I grab an Arizona Ice tea. Those things have alot less calories than a soda.
I've lost 6 lbs in the last month and a half. I want to lose about ten more pounds.

Good luck with yours, theres alot of good ideas in here.

Get a heartrate monitor.

Start small.

I have in the past, always, always done too much, too soon, got pissed off, given up.

Making it a habit is more important than what you do. Once you establish the habit so much it's just ingrained, then you can think about what to do, specifically.

So, pick something you can stick with for a set period of time, then swap that to something more specific, later.

Keep a food diary. Even on your shitty days.

Don't focus too much on weight loss. I notice that it has only been a week and you are already hooked on looking at weight loss.

Remember that it took you many years to get to where you are weight-wise and it is going to take you at least 6 months to a. change the bad habits and b. become more active and healthy.

You are on your way to fitness though. :thumbup

P.S. Superchicken Arizona Ice Tea is a no no if you are trying to be healthy. That damn drink is chock full of simple carbs.

What would make me gain weight was the snacking, I've always eaten healthy meals, but I would just snack on random food like popcorn, pop tarts, cookies candy etc. Because of the healthier meals I ate I didn't gain any weight but I didn't lose anything either. cutting the snacking is what is working.

I'd have moments where I would not do any forms of exercise. I think I spent a month of not doing any real exercise. I have a schedule now that isn't too demanding and I can see myself sticking with it in the long run.

I think I got the snacking habit down, I drink a lot of water and that calms my hunger some what, but now I eat healthier snacks that still taste good, such as strawberries, nectarines, peaches, and wheat products. I also eat more often now but I eat smaller portions, it seems like that is helping me control my hunger and boost my metabolism at the same time:thumbup

Your right, but having something thats not that healthy every so often isn't that bad.

Do p90x. It will get you the lean/toned look. It worked for me. It's the best workout I've found. I like that it's very structured. Tells you what exercises to do for how long and what days. Also it's got easy, medium and hard variations of each exercise to customize the program to your fitness level.

Diet is more important than exercise (nobody ever listens to this advice for some reason :laughing).
Using myfooddiary.com worked when nothing else did.
It educated me on how much crap is in most foods.
Too much fat, salt, and sugar in almost everything that's even slightly processed.
Kind of depressing and it becomes clear why 2/3s of americans are overweight.

If you want to lose weight quickly do the "10 day Lean Jean Plan" which comes part of the 10-minute trainer.

Don't forget to get in some stretching during your daily fitness routine. Being flexible has tons of benefits. :thumbup

Good advice in this thread. Two more pieces:

Avoid alcohol, calories up the ying yang.
Don't think of your changes as a diet. Diets are like vacations, we plan on coming back. Don't plan on coming back, think of the way you are eating now as the way you will eat for the rest of your life.

in order for that to work would it be ok to eat something that isn't healthy but tastes good every once in a while? There are sometimes when I crave something like a slice of pizza, usually that is if it is right next to me. I am trying to make a lifetime change in the foods I eat, I think the more information on what is good for me the easier it will become. I am starting to find more foods that I like to eat and are healthy.

I have always liked eating fruit, and I like sandwiches and whole wheat breads, never like mayo or ranch on my food either.

I eat something like a hamburger or ice cream or a coke, but maybe once a month.

PS: On whole wheat breads, read the labels. There is no regulation on what whole wheat means, and many are full of sugar and partially hydrogenated oil. The only commercial bread I eat is Orowheat "winter wheat".

Ernie makes perhaps the best point here - this should be a lifetime change.

That's the issue with most diets, people use them to get to a goal, then totally fall off the wagon - which is, incidentally, more harmful than just staying overweight the entire time, not to mention the damage it does to your ego to 'yo-yo'.

Aiming for a short-term goal for an event is fine - but - make sure 'normal' eating is somewhat healthy - forever.

Denying yourself something completely is a recipe (pun intended) for disaster.

As the saying goes, 'A little bit of what you fancy never did anyone any harm'. It's a LOT of what you fancy, often, that does the damage.

I did notice that there is a lot of whole weat that is a bunch of crap. I find that the cheap stuff is the most unhealthy. They contain high fructose corn syrup, Out of all the bread I looked at almost all had too much sugar added or high fructose corn syrup.

the orowheat lineup looks to be the best. I bought some orowheat active health wheat and some health nut bread. Neither have the high fructose corn syrup

I have spent time in Safeway reading labels. Interesting reading. ALL of the cereals contain added sugar, some also have corn syrup, and some partially hydrogenated fats.

Almost all of the breads contain either sugar/corn syrup or hydrogenated oils. "Safeway" indeed :laughing
