Hot Springs Swing: 2500 Miles Of Nevada Dirt

I've enjoyed the journey.
Thanks so much for sharing!
I now have some destination ideas.

Oh, yes…mmm hmm...I like the direction this is going…

today a t-shirt…tomorrow the world!

Muahahahahaaa!

Gotta stop at Sheman Pass Vista Point, though! Even more cold at 9900'…

... we may have just missed each other!: Sherman Pass on 10/8/16

(I can hear the collective cheer going up right now…"Yay! Only 4 days! That means she'll only post…what…400 photos? Maybe only 350? Woo-hoo!" :laughing)

That Sherman Pass Trail looks like a blast. How did I not know about that one already?!?!??!?!

Dude! Have you ever ridden Kennedy Meadows? Also called Kern Plateau and/or Troy Meadows? There is some seriously good riding down there. The largest concentration of alpine meadows in the entire Sierra range, and it is stunningly beautiful in the spring/summer. And singletrack for days! It's pretty fantastic there. Lots of granite, too!

Right on! I have no tracks to share but I'd be happy to answer any questions and/or show you maps if you'd like.

Ok, you asked for it…:x

I think I missed you by 2 weeks. Would have loved to see those bikes out there, though! :thumbup

We awoke to cold sunshine, the prospect of a very long day of riding, and my favorite kind of rock!

Left camp at 8, and had the road to ourselves. Sherman Pass Road, and the whole road down into Porterville, really, is one of my favorite sections of pavement in the entire state. It's a bit rough and a bit dirty…and downright sandy at times…but I love it. Fantastic scenery, too…which you will see none of because I didn't stop to take photos :laughing

I'm glad this place is open again. It was closed for about 20 years or so…

Not too far from here we hopped onto Deer Creek Rd. The map shows it to be a county road but not ½ mile into it we were wondering if we'd taken a wrong turn. It was very narrow, steep, had no tracks on it, was way up high on the side of the mountain instead of following the creek far below as the map had suggested, and looked to be used only by cattle. Lots of cattle. The dirt was churned up and several inches deep with silt…it just didn't look like a thoroughfare. We dug out the GPS and, sure enough, we were in the right place. Immediately after we looked it up it turned into a normal looking road…
file_zpssbxv0vty.jpg

I'd love to see this road in the spring…
file_zpsbei7ng8l.jpg

This was a great place to remove layers and wash off dust…

file_zpsfdwusdc3.jpg

This cattle stuff looked old and unused…
file_zps36clggwk.jpg

file_zpsi0uwegwk.jpg

Little did we know that we were entering a vast and very active cattle ranch…
file_zpsjzscfjfs.jpg

It was a long and arduous process, getting the dogies to move along, and the head cattleman apologized to us. He wanted to know where we were headed, and he offered us water. We were good, and told him we were in no hurry (which wasn't true, but what are ya gonna do?) We'd pull up in a shady spot and shut the bikes off and wait. As they moved forward we'd move forward and repeat the process. At some point we noticed a Jeep behind us doing the same thing. It was going to be a long morning…
file_zpsbsklusq7.jpg

We could only see about 8 cows, and wondered why we couldn't just slide by the trailer and trucks and go on about our business. The head honcho told us there was a wide spot coming up and he'd have the gal in pink lead us through the cows. He was really pleasant and genuinely concerned about holding us up (on a county road.) Anyway, by the time we got to go around the trailer and fall in behind Pink Cowgirl, there had to be 150 cows on the road! No lie! She was loping along quite slowly and we stayed right on her tail, occasionally dodging the falling horseshit. We were barely going at a walking pace. I wish I could have stopped and taken some photos but it was impossible. It took us awhile but we finally made it through. I thanked Pink Cowgirl and her helper, and told told them it was quite the experience! Not something you get to do every day on a motorcycle, that's for sure.

The rest of the road was just as awesome, even after it turned to pavement. Brought us all the way into the backside of Porterville through the orange groves.

Ok, crossing the central valley was just pure hell. No photos, just slogging and jogging and looking at the maps and marveling at all the Trump billboards and just hating it in general. It was so hard not to just turn around and head back to the calm peaceful solitude of Nevada. We tried to take backroads, which was all well and good, but it's like No Man's Land out there. No signage, nothing. We came through the beautiful orange groves of Porterville and ended up somewhere in Corcoran, even though we wanted to be south of there. Anyway, we ended up on HWY 41 and made it to the Paso Robles Inn at 3:30pm, a full half hour before check in time. Only thing to do was have a drink in the bar!
We had tickets to go see War and Tower of Power at Vina Robles Amphitheater at 7pm, so we had a few hours to relax in our luxurious digs…

Why, yes, that is a private hot springs tub on our deck!

Sadly, I haven't. I REALLY need to explore California and Nevada a bit more thoroughly on my 690.

This ride report is amazing (as usual). Thank you so much for bringing us along. I'm sad that we are getting near the end. :(

Always wanted to go explore the trails at Kennedy Meadows. Who wants to go next year?

Did I just witness the birth of a Kennedy Meadows BARF Bash??

:party

If you go down there, Lunch Box, I'd strongly recommend taking your KDX for the trails, and the 690 for beer runs down to the Kennedy Meadows store :teeth

I posted a Kennedy Meadows ride report here a few years ago but my friend Mimi must have done something with her photos because the links to all her photos are broken. I'm going to try to restore those as soon as I can. It's such a beautiful place! :love

As far as sadness goes, I'm totally bummed the ride is over, but almost giddy that the report is over :laughing It's been a long one!

badger

first wild badger I ever saw was on way into Cali hot springs, on left side, on a hillside pockmarked with ground squirrel holes

So the concert was excellent, although it was so strange to go from almost constant solitude to being with 3,300 other people along with loud music and all that goes with it. Weather was perfect all night for sandals and skirt (shipped nice clothes to the hotel before we left, worked out great!) and the venue was excellent. Not a bad seat in the house, wine and food offerings were great with virtually no lines, cheap refills (refills!) on wine, and the sound was perfect. War totally nailed it:thumbup Every song was knockout. Poor Tower of Power…total embodiment of the saying "tough act to follow." They were awesome, too, tho! Looking for an excuse to go back to both places!

Got back to the hotel and soaked in our private hot springs tub on the deck. The water had a slight sulfurous smell but that doesn't bother me. There were little sachets of liquid scents that you could dump in if you wanted. Been wanting to come here to the Paso Robles Inn forever so it was great to finish off our trip in such luxury!

Speaking of luxury, morning coffee in a wine glass…
file_zpserl4bjbp.jpg

A fabulous morning…and I'm putting off donning my filthy gear and riding home on one of the hottest days of the year…
file_zpsxjooingg.jpg

But ride home we did…and it was brutal!
We split lanes from Salinas all the way to Gilroy. I'd wanted to take back roads home, either Nacimiento-Ferguson and the coast, or through the San Benito Valley on Peachtree, Parkfield, Clear Creek-Coalinga, Clear Creek, Idria, and then hit one more hot springs…Mercey, but there just wasn't enough time. We were both anxious to get home to our kitties. So we split lanes. in the heat. For miles and miles and miles….

Oh…have I mentioned that both of our bikes ran like tops the entire time? No issues, no hiccups…not even a loose bolt. Can you believe we actually said that out loud before we left Paso Robles? Yeah, me neither...

So, we probably could have made it home on the fuel we had, but no…we had to stop in Fremont for gas. I was getting dehydrated and needed water anyway, but I could have made it home. Anyway, we fuel up, slam down some liquids and fire up the bikes for the last stretch. Well, the Husky fires up, anyway. The big KTM? Nope…

:mad

Out come the tools, for the first time in 2500 miles…and we're a mere 26 miles from home!
file_zpsxixyradz.jpg

Seems there was a loose wire somewhere between the starter switch and the starter itself. He had it fixed and buttoned up in a few minutes…
file_zpsadpwenm0.jpg

And that was the very last photo I took, as ½ hour later we were home! Happy and sad at the same time, and I was ready to take off again the next day!

It was a fantastic trip, the first we've done for this long completely unsupported, and I am really looking forward to more trips just like it.

I plan on tracing the route onto my Nevada state map and I'll post a photo of it when I do, hopefully tomorrow.

As far as the hot springs portion goes, we managed to visit 14 natural hot springs! Not all of them were soakable, one was abandoned and closed to the public, a few were commercial, but they were all spectacular in their own way. It's funny…I have a burning need to spend time in the desert, but what I love most is water…go figure! Finding water in the desert is a very special and delicious treat for me. Now I only have about a million more hot springs to see :)

Thanks for coming along, everyone. I know this was a long and arduous journey, and I appreciate your stamina and patience :laughing

Absolutely awesome trip report. It's started a fire in me to get a dual sport and take off on adventures. I've lived in this area my whole life and never knew there were so many springs out in the Nevada desert. Congrats. Well done.

:love

Thank you, once again, for taking us all along on your journey. You are one of the most inspiring posters on BARF, and are one of the people who makes it impossible for me to step away. Thank you! :hail

Thank you for taking the time to do this fantastic report. Enjoyed the pictures. Going to try and get my camper out that way next year. Wife does not ride so if you see a FWC stop and say hi.

Saw this on FB and somehow thought of you. Might be your next back pack.

Wow! Thank you! That's the best compliment anyone can give! There is just so much to see in this awesome world of ours, and it almost always has a dirt road leading to it :) Getting off the pavement expanded my world exponentially, and I'm sure it'll do the same for you :thumbup
I'm looking forward to a ride report from you, Maddevill :)

And as far as springs go, I barely scratched the surface. There's a ton of water in Nevada, it's just not readily apparent to the paved-road traveler. You kind of have to go looking for it.

Aww… Thank you, Aaron! :)
It's nice to sort of be back in the groove again, and it would make me sad if you weren't here anymore! Don't go!!

:laughing Good lawd-a-mighty that's a huge backpack! :laughing I used to ride with one (albeit not that big :laughing) but it got to be a drag. It's nice just having stuff strapped to the back now.

Thanks for the kind words, bikeama :)

You're funny, John! You've done far cooler stuff than a 2-week trip to Nevada! :laughing

Awesome report, thanks for posting.

This will do…
file_zpskooy1ivl.jpg

Last I camped/rode there, I tried to convince my friend Nick to hit that little kicker that's right in front of your bikes, and jump over the hot spring.

Honestly, it seems perfectly doable, but alas he didn't take the bait. :laughing

Wonderful ride report, WoodsChick. Thank you for taking us along. Inspiring.

... funny looking and funny smelling, maybe ... :x

I was by
California Hot Springs this spring on the
streetbikes, and
was eyeing all the dirt roads up that way ...
have no idea now why we didn't stop at CHS ...
we went by it twice trying to find our way
to Hwy 155 ... :rolleyes
Didn't realize it had been closed so long ...

Seriously, though, it's all about the
next trip, anyway, isn't it? :party
... none of us
ride forever ... :nchantr

thanks to you and Eric

plan my next trip ... :thumbup

You are so right about that, John! We are all burning daylight at an alarmingly fast rate. No time to waste.

If you want to sit down for a beer or a cuppa Joe sometime and look at maps just let me know!
