How come LEO's don't wear gear?

I must point out that I think it's funny that this is a debate... Safety gear is a personal choice

Helmets aren't a choice.

Seatbelts aren't a choice.

Who is determining the safety gear of moto officers?

Who is paying for CHP officers that get in traffic accidents?

Clearly, safety gear isn't completely a personal choice.

BTW, for those of you who haven't been on a big bike with bags and a big windscreen, you feel like you are riding in a car. It "feels" safe on them. You don't feel like you are "out in the elements" on one. Sort of strange.

No disrespect intended, but.....
I and several hundred others, were able to breach & clear quite a few off shore locations while in full protective gear including kevlar, body armor, lid, coms, weapons, and goggles.
I've never been a LEO, but from the few I know and the few I've encountered, I'm 99.99% sure that full motorcycle gear for LEO or anyone else weighs less than the gear we were burdened with while performing our duties.

Sounds like you need a better union.

Yea but I wasn't here before and you know I have :2cents to throw in.... Besides... it is slow right now....:teeth

One of the biggest reasons.....TRADITION!

The motorboots are really great.... still have a pair... can't get rid of them... but their original purpose was to keep officers from burning their legs on the old Harleys exhaust back when cops first went on bikes.

At least this is how I heard the story.:mm4l

We don't call them accidents. A tree falling on your car is an accident, a collision is caused by unsafe driving.

What about when a deer leaps out of the bushes and broadsides you as you go by? What about mechanical failure of the bike (that was not due to inadequate maintenance)?

Accidents can happen while you're moving.

Intimidation? Really? Isn't that part of the job description, and why cops will pull their guns on civilians at the drop of the hat?

Whether or not the officer is angry or aggressive, people comply better if you seem more human. Firefighters have that problem, when they try to save small children in burning buildings who run away because they look scary.

sliverstorm; Firefighters have that problem said:
You lie, no one ever runs from fire fighters, everyone LOVES them... hehehehe

In Richmond they just shoot at them :| RFD wears or has access to body armor in most engine companies.

It's not just looking scary- it's sounding scary. A FF wearing an SCBA /air pack that sounds like Darth Vader can scare the crap outta a kid who is trying to hide in a closet or underneath a bed during a fire.

Isn't that why schools do fire drills and have the fire department come hang out like 2-3 times a year? I can see a really young child doing that perhaps but I guess I just never ran into that sort of problem.

My main beef with seeing Leo's riding with brain buckets, short sleeves, and tights is that it sets a VERY bad example for our youth.

This notion about setting examples for kids...which kids? Do you really believe in today's bratty, parents give them everything, entitled, dotting era of child raising- the kids give a rat's ass about what a cop wears or doesn't?

This. I went from riding my 1100RT-P yesterday to my new to me SV650 back and forth a few times - city and twisty riding on both - amazing how different I feel on them. Or when I take the the MV out... I wont go out unless Im in full leathers, when the RTP Ill jump on it work boots and jeans and a tshirt for trips around town. Still only on 2 wheels :|

not all of us parents allow our children to bratty and or entitled. My kids are quickly corrected if they even refer to a LEO as a "cop". They are "police officers" or any other respectable term. And yes, my 7 year old son asks me every time when we see a mounted LEO, "why isn't he wearing all his gear?".
Whether you like to believe it or not, kids tend to look up to people of authority, such as teachers, LEOs and firefighters.

Sounds like perhaps your kid does- congratulations for that- but I wouldn't paint such a broad stroke for anything close to the majority.

please write a book and host parenting seminars. you're a dying breed it seems! :thumbup

I always find it comical when people say things like "most kids these days". How would you know how "most" kids are these days? Have you met "most" kids? No, you have not.

It's usually people without children who make these comments. I'm a parent with two sons of my own and all the kids who live in my neighborhood are good, respectful kids. They ask me questions about my bike, my gear, everything.

We have to set the example. If not us, who will? The attitude that "kids won't listen anyway" is counter productive.

Motor cops set the example whether they like it or not. "Cops don't signal, either" - I've heard that one alot.

(Psst- no one wrote "most kids". But hey, nice try!)
