How long will a KTM 690 motor last?

Thanks for all of the replies. It really got me thinking. As much as I would like the new Duke to be what I would like it to be, it won't. It is too busy being an awesome single. I think I am looking for something that will require less daily care. I am a terrible bike shopper.

You should consider a Harley

Tuono or monster
While I agree those are awesome bikes, if the OP is having trouble justifying a KTM due to "daily care", I suspect an Aprilia and a Ducati would not assuage his fears. Just sayin'...

They'll last longer than a KTM 690 :)

Statistically you're probably right, but my brand new 2012 1098s Streetfighter lasted 10 months before I had to get rid of it. I still have my '09 SMC.

Anecdotal at best, so your mileage may vary! :)

OK, thread derail- I 'think' I'd like a streetfighter for a 2nd bike- did you not like it or too many problems? I've had pretty good luck w/ my Ducs but don't know a lot of streetfighter common issues. Do tell :)

I absolutely loved the concept of that bike, the implementation... not so much. I really hated to sell it but once it was gone, I felt tons better. Way too many issues/niggles, if you really want to know I can PM you.

I think my Ducati was built the Monday following an Italian all weekend drinking holiday.

Yamaha made a TTR600 but never sold it here.

The 690 motor is not maintenance extensive as people are saying it is. The motor holds 2 quarts of oil. You don't have to use motorex. Husqvarna recommends Hillbilly Bel Ray oil. I use motul for about 40 bucks for 4 liters instead of 50 to 60 for motorex.

It's a naked bike so there aren't that many plastics to remove. It's only one cylinder so you are only checking valve clearance on one piston. The engine is easily removed for your DIY'ers.

If you have doubts then don't buy it.

Agreed. It's nowhere near as maintenance intensive as the true dirt bike motors. It's still not built to make it anywhere close to 100k, though.

Why would you second guess ktm and not use the recommend oil? Besides savings a few bucks what's the advance.

After switching to motul, it started to consume less oil and it's more superior than motorex and it smells nice too. Its just my preference.

Think about it, if Husqvarna and KTM recommends different oil brands on the same motor why should I waste my money since it is "recommended" and not required. You are not forced to buy what is recommended by the manufacturer.

You could probably switch to any heavier oil if you just want to consume less.
As far as KTM and husquvarna recommending different oil, that's a good question.
For me it's just as easy to do what the manual says, certainly while still under warranty.

Agreed.

Not to start an oil war, but I've used the recommended Motorex 10w60 from day one and my motor never needs the oil to be topped off. I've never, as in ever, had to add oil between oil changes. Of course, YMMV...
