Huge explosion in Texas.

Once again there are people in harm's way doing everything necessary to save lives

God be with them tonight

NPR says its a fertilizer plant. I'm betting industrial accident. Wouldn't be too surprised if welders were involved. NPR also said there wee fires going on before the explosions.

Heathen prayers for those caught in this mess.

From a friend: "The local emergency management team has confirmed that at least 6 firefighters from the initial attack team are missing." :| :flag

That was a monster blast.... a first responders nightmare.

:rip

Buddy just called me. He's been doing trauma counseling there for the last several hours. They called in medevacs from Ft. Hood, ran out of choppers from Dallas. Confirmed roughly 60 dead, many more wounded. Said he's running on a 30+ hour shift and finally got permission to get some rest.

Holy shit. This has to be one of the most devastating industrial accidents in years.

He said there's 2 tanks still burning. Can't get choppers or anything close enough to dump chemicals/water. So they have to wait either for the fire to burn itself out or for the other 2 tanks to explode. Said it's pretty hairy out there, lotta people walking around shell-shocked. Resources stretched thin. Ft hood's helping out a lot. West is roughly an hour from main base and a very short helicopter flight. National guard's helping out too.

Anhydrous ammonia is a quick killer
Forget the fire, get away from the ammonia

Been around it quite a bit
Worked for a small fertilizer plant during nursing school
Did exercises with a pipeline company when I was a firefighter

By the time you smell it, you're too close

^ This without question. And make that like a mile away.

They were rightfully concerned about the winds last night
I have not seen an update this morning
