If Barf went dark for a week to upgrade would you survive?

I hate all the new forum layouts that were implemented when whatever syndicate bought up all the other motoforums years ago. Old school vbulletin is the bees knees for me.

Agreed!

One of the things I like about BARF as a forum is actually the color combos and the forum software itself. I forget if its VForum or whatever.

I find it easier to read, easier to navigate. These thing help it be more active.

I hope that can remain?

This as well.

Also, the older software is fast, as it doesn't come loaded with bloated code.

But at the end of the day, at some point you have to upgrade as patches become unavailable, etc.

Goddamn! I've been on here nearly 20 years. :laughing

Ev!!! Hope you still play Starcraft every now and then :thumbup twenty year crew!!

Count me in for not wanting the forum look and feel to change much.

Yeah, do it.

Some suggestions:
1. Setup a new DB on the server.
2. Setup a new folder with the new code.
3. You can setup scripts to run the conversion and tweak them until you're happy with the end result. If you have the new code on a subdomain pointing towards the new folder, the two can co-exist during testing.
4. When you're ready to throw the switch, bring down BARF (so there is no updates or lost input) which can be done with an addition to the .htaccess file and a target page which says work in progress, run the script, point the main url towards the new folder. Done.

Yeah, I've been through the process a time or two.

Is mojo going to make a comeback?

Best to just do it as soon as you think you have a set path forward, no need to wait it out.

The new gig has an open office layout where anyone walking past can see my monitors. I don’t waste any time dicking around on the internet and feel better at the end of the day for actually getting stuff done.

As long as there is a flash page explaining that it's down for a reason that would be great anytime. I like this old page width format and all that. It's comforting compared to all the over-stimulating jazzy shit everywhere else.
I guess you could do a Valgar epsom salts story on the page, like a clipping on the flash page for people to read while they despair and remind all why we love BARF.

But... if I can't post pictures of my ride, did I really ride? :laughing

May as well sort it out, I'll probably get more work done during the weekdays...

It's odd. Our two newest employees, including the new Asst. Managing Editor (literally, second in command ) , have the FaceySpace or political sites up all the time on one of their two monitors for all to see. It surprises me that they don't bother trying to hide it. I guess it's a function of age. Us Okay Boomers are sneakier about it.

"If you love something, set it free for a week. If it comes back to you the Barf upgrade was successful"
Yeah, Bud. Do whatever needs to be done. :thumbup

I’m one of the managers I should be setting an example :x

I do the same, albeit, I have 3 monitors plus a laptop screen, and only 1 of the 4 will have nonwork stuff on it. The other 3 are email and other chatter, the coding screen, and the web and sql screen. IMO, as long as the work gets done, who cares.

Some good input -- thank you.

I dig this feel as well. Turning off all the clutter stuff so we don't have to manage it.. figuring out Moderation tools etc. We have some testing going on now. Need some more HP to make the jump and I want to make sure as we can that we don't screw it up.

We intend to keep it as close to barf home as possible.

Mojo was a disaster after a bit. Fan boys vs non. :facepalm

It was fun at first... the less clickish as possible I think is good for the community overall.

We will figure it out and let everyone know before pulling the trigger and hopefully it will be much faster than a week. Just don't know that for sure yet.
