Insurance - AAA & Progressive

What works for me is Geico for the Motorcycle, less than $ 150 a year full coverage.
( if you have a newer type of sportbike like GSXR/R1,R6/600RR,1000RR, ZX10, etc, that gets stolen often it would be allot more $$$ )

with your bike the cost should be around the same depending on your driving record and age.

and

AAA for the Towing/Roadside assistance $ 120 a year.
( it paid off a few years back many times over in reimbursements )

What do you consider full coverage and at what level? And for what bike? $150 a year equates to $12.50 a month.

Call everyone, GEICO quoted me 2x what Progressive did (with USAA)

Here's my numbers:

29 years old. DL for 11-12 years. M endorsement for 7-8 years. Took the MSF. Live in Oaklamd.

Geico
2002 R1150RT
12 month premium: 953$
Bodily Injury Liability 30k/60k
Prop Damage Liability 5k
Medical Payments 2k
Comprehensive 1k deductible
Collision 1k deduct
Towing (was an extra 10$ on top of comp coverage)

Not entirely sure if my coverage is good enough actually. When I got the RT I had to get less coverage to make it more affordable. Before the RT my Wolf 150 was only 350$/year for better coverage.

*edit* just got a quote from Progressive with nearly the same coverage:

same coverage with Progressive would be 897.75$

Progressive:
bod inj: 30/60
med pay: 2,500 each person
comp: 1k
collision: 1k
accessory cov: 3k
roadside assistance: (extra 6$)

USAA is different state to state and used to underwrite with progressive in Cali for moto. They may or may not be experimenting with offering coverage themselves for moto riders with a license that is at least 3 years old (again all info is from the agent I talked to so not infallible). Seems perhaps I need to call a few times and get on the phone with someone that actually knows their stuff. Thanks for the info from your personal experience, that's what I was looking for. I switched to Progressive just because it was more clear and easy (aka cheap to add as you said) if I had towing or not and the increase in cost was pretty similar to just getting towing only from another place (AMA, AAA, or what have you).

I have towing included with roadside assistance with USAA AND Progressive, and it's only like $1 more a month. Not sure what you mean since USAA does not insure motorcycles period.

USAA will directly insure motorcycles in California (and a few other select states) if you have had your motorcycle endorsement for at least 3 years and you insure at least one car on the same policy. You will have to call them and get someone in the phone who knows about it. I've had my bike insured through USAA for a couple years now.

Wow. They have a hidden insurance menu? LOL

Are you people high?

I have USAA in California, they cover moto's. Only in California.
When I was living in Maryland my USAA policy was underwritten by Progressive.

Saying that, Progressive did me well. Twice. Two totaled bikes and gear within 4 months. Would do business with again. (But am back with USAA since I'm back in California)

USAA told me they don't offer it... Wth

I've had nothing but horrifying experiences with State Farm. Ended up costing me thousands of dollars.

I had Progressive for years and was always happy with it. Ended up switching to Allstate and have had a very good experience with Allstate in two different states, including a car totaled by a hit-and-run (get the uninsured motorist coverage!).

Hit and run under CA law isn't covered by uninsured motorists

I only found out about it after digging deep into their website and reading a short statement about it in the FAQ a few years ago. I found the original text elsewhere (copied below), but I can't find it on the USAA site anymore so they might be trying their hardest to not let people know about it. My understanding is that they still offer the insurance to certain states only because the states mandate it. I don't know if that has changed since I started my policy with them.

Motorcycle Insurance at USAA

Posted: 02/23/2009

USAA regularly looks for ways to offer the best products at the best price and, often, alliances with other insurers are the right thing to do. That's why the USAA General Agency is aligned with insurers specializing in coverage and sophisticated pricing specifically designed for motorcycles.

In fact, the USAA General Agency does a tremendous amount of due diligence to select the best motorcycle and other specialty insurance providers by evaluating such things as their financial strength, claims paying ability, price competitiveness, service reputation and fit with USAA's culture. The USAA General Agency monitors all service levels to ensure USAA standards are met.

As required by law, USAA continues to insure motorcycles in Massachusetts, Michigan and New Hampshire in addition to the following states and countries as noted below. Members currently insured with USAA in all other states will be referred to the USAA General Agency for coverage when adding or replacing a motorcycle.
California — USAA insures only those operators with a motorcycle license or endorsement for the three years prior to seeking insurance.
North Carolina — USAA insures for liability only. However, physical damage is available only if a member has a motorcycle on his or her existing USAA policy with physical damage coverage.
International — Motorcycle insurance is written by USAA companies within each respective country.

Edit: I found the link where I originally read the information but it seems that USAA took down the page: https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/advice_motorcycle_insurance
