Erik, you and Daniel are in the same low IQ league.

Daniel does not have a driver's license!!! Do you get it? Breaking news: yes, there's a punishment for driving without a license.

Do you have anything to back up your claim? Learners permits are just that, a permit received before a license. Doesn't it seem odd that the DMV would issue a permit that is not legal to use? (not that DMV have never done anything odd).

I thought a permit allowed you to ride/drive with certain limitations.
For riding, you can't take a passenger or ride at night or on the freeways.
And for driving, all I remember is that you can't drive anybody else, unless they are 25 or over or something like that. It has been a few years since I've done the permit thing, so I forget :toothless

The chillage needs to happen, and like, now, folks... I read the first post, and then read the last few posts, and it's not clear how we got from point A (simple question) to point B (generally pissyness and unpleasantry). Let's get it back on track and ease up on the tough love approach or else I will force you to wash my dusty Ducati with a Q-tip and your toothbrush for the next week.

Bah, a couple of beers and a fist-fight will take care of everything.

I love insurance. Say you crash and you put someone in the hospital. Police find you at fault. That person spends 3 days in the hospital from a pelvic fracture (or something). You're on the line for their hospital bill, which will be around $50,000. I don't have that money in the bank, but by paying $50 a month to my insurance company and having enough coverage, my insurance pays that bill and I'm not making payments for that hospital bill.

I thought motorcycle insurance doesn't cover medical bills and only the cost of the bike in the event of a crash? I'm paying $35/mo. for my ninja and the only thing covered is the bike. Did I get screwed here?

Liability coverage pays for medical payments and personal property damage if you're in an at-fault accident (for the person/vehicle you hit). It would also cover a lawsuit settlement if you were to get sued because you caused bodily harm to someone and you are at fault.

If you're in an at-fault accident and cause bodily injury to someone, there is a very good chance that you'll be sued. Typically it's medical bill X3. 1/3 for the bill, 1/3 for the lawyer, 1/3 for pain and suffering. This is why having good liability coverage is very important.

Hmm I have Statefarm they told me they don't sell liability coverage to motorcycle riders....fishy?

The problem was that his insurance carrier didn't consider his permit to be a license so they wouldn't give him coverage on his bike.

:rofl

Thanks, partly my fault for not clearly outlining my situation. I just assumed people would fully read the main post before replying, but to be fair, it was quite lengthy.

Actually, I do have coverage. The problem is that (and I got this answer by various replies in this thread) both agents, one on my mom's side and one on my side are contradicting one another. Apparently, both are incorrect and I'm going to find another insurance carrier, whether the mistake is intentional or not. Both sides are saying they "called the main office" for information, so either corporate is filled with idiots, or they're lying through their teeth about calling in the first place.
[After rereading, you are correct. I had to use my mom's insurance number as a reference on my application, which caused the above issue]

And as a reference point for those who decide to reply:
I do have my permit, a motorcycle, and insurance. I just passed MSF and the requirements on my permit are exactly this:

You probably heard wrong. In California you legally have to have at least liability coverage of something like 15000 per person/25000 per incident. If you have the bare minimum, it's liability.
