Is chivalry really dead?

I completely agree!! I hold the door and say hello to strangers because I prefer to be polite. I find happiness in putting a smile on someone's face. Plus, Common courtesy is something the world needs more of and I have no problem doing my part.

Absolutely this.

Nope. Holding a door open for a woman is common courtesy. If you open it for her because she's a woman in an attempt to be "chivalrous", it's sexist.

Make sense?

Chivalry is just throwback language for "common courtesy". They're the same thing in practice.

The idea that a women would wait for a man to save her from situational distress, or the distress of being unmarried is appalling, and shouldn't be conflated with chivalry.

Ever been in a BARF women's issue thread? It's White Knight city...and yet, the women are all fully capable of handling the forum individually..or the track? Chivalry is alive and well on BARF in the form of men thinking women need help, when they do not.

You're assuming that a guy holding the door for a woman is a sexist. How about just common courtesy/ basic human decency?

I hold the door open for others, I guess that makes me a sexist.

Shut up Climber!:twofinger

I basicly agree with your first definition of chivarly as boiling down to common courtesty today, but think that it is better expressed as people in positions of relative power, and how they should act as societal role models carrying cudgels.

Maybe the second part of your post is what most people think of as chivarly, but I truly hope that it is not best defined by, "men thinking women need help, when they do not.".

Place white knight emogi here

just to baseline, here's the original definition:

The "code of chivalry" is a product of the Late Middle Ages, evolving after the end of the crusades partly from an idealization of the historical knights fighting in the Holy Land and from ideals of courtly love.

Ten Commandments of Chivalry

1. Thou shalt believe all that the Church teaches and thou shalt observe all its directions.
2. Thou shalt defend the church.
3. Thou shalt respect all weaknesses, and shalt constitute thyself the defender of them.
4. Thou shalt love the country in which thou wast born.
5. Thou shalt not recoil before thine enemy.
6. Thou shalt make war against the infidel without cessation and without mercy.
7. Thou shalt perform scrupulously thy feudal duties, if they be not contrary to the laws of God.
8. Thou shalt never lie, and shalt remain faithful to thy pledged word.
9. Thou shalt be generous, and give largesse to everyone.
10. Thou shalt be everywhere and always the champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.

#3 is what i think most are wrapped around the axle on. perhaps #9 also.

Must get confusing when meeting a weak infidel who was born in your country.

there's probably a lot any individual person could take issue with. what is more perplexing, is that modern people hang their hat on a centuries old construct that they have only a very vague understanding of.

Still lots of Bibles and Korans getting sold, so not really that surprising that people are basing there lives on various other bits of ancient history they only vaguely understand as well.

Logical consistency isn't really a strong point in many old writings/stories/theories.

By that definition, I'm glad Chivalry is dead.

Back then it was completely acceptable to Christians to see people drawn an quartered, Pear of anguish (expanding device inserted into vagina or anus then expanded open), Judas Cradle (Pyramid shape inserted into vaiging or anus, let body weight do the rest), Saw Torture (Hang upside down and saw in half from groin), Breaking Wheel (fastened to a wagon wheel and have arms and legs broken with iron cudgel), Head Crusher (Heads if vice object), Rat Torture, etc...

In other words, very different from us and Christians don't do those things anymore or find them acceptable. Same with Chivalry, the accepted definition of that has evolved as well.

I learned from a face palm emoji on a dating app that its more chivalrous to ask for a phone number than to give your phone number. This girl asked the question "Is chivalry dead?" in her profile. I guess that giving your phone number is too casual.

Meh, that history should be common knowledge. In this culture we are 'the children of, the children of . . . '. If more of us remembered that's where this culture has it's roots then maybe we wouldn't be in the circumstances we are. Instead of thinking we're all just so special and 'resting on our laurels' maybe we could realize that we were a mess and we still have a ways to go.

Sorry if the graphic detail was upsetting, but people were reacting to the 'rules' of chivalry back then, I was putting things in perspective on the absolute fact that it was a completely different time than now. The original 'rules' for chivalry are not applicable, that was then, this is now.
