I've been riding without gear

Also, learn some contemporary terms. Web-based discussion forums are generally referred to as "forums". Anyone calling them BBSes is just being pretentious.

And incorrect.

Everyone settle down. Thanks for the backup Connie :) you're sweet
It's all good no offense taken..moving on

You're welcome, m'dear. Now, if I catch you riding without gear... you are sooooo gonna get it!!!! :shame
And "it's hot out" is no excuse, since I just spent Saturday at T-Hill in temps in excess of 105 degrees, in full leather, all day! :p

Squid it up Var, contrary to popular belief you won't immediately die just because you're not wearing gear.

I wear a short sleeve shirt 12 hours a day while I ride a motorcycle, and guess what? I'm still alive!

Just be careful and enjoy your ride. I stopped being a gear nazi years ago.

That's kind of an unfair assessment of the value of wearing at least some kind of gear. You're coming from the perspective of someone who has the previlege of being a motor cop. Any injury you might receive riding to and from work and while on duty is covered by your department (IOD- injury on duty). It sucks to get hurt regardless, sucks even more if you have no health insurance and won't get paid if you can't work. Not to mention the fact that most motor cops also get hazard pay on top of that.

I figured out how to cool down on a really hot day. Put my t shirt and whatever pants I ride with in the damn fridge for when I leave work

Can I use this as my sig line? :laughing

I think all the harsh words did it..(or maybe it was the weather) I put on my damn leather jacket and boots but I still wore jeans. Maybe I need some leather overpants next. DOes anyone make chaps that don't looks completely homo?

www.foxcreekleather.com Men's>Motorcycle Chaps>Scroll down to Men's Leather Overpants

They make a pair of heavy overpants that covers your ass with full zippers on both legs. Heavy zippers. Made in USA. Not cheap $345.00. I got some on sale last winter and Johnson Leather in SF custom fit T-Pro armor pockets for the knees and hips. Baggy enough to wear over jeans but I usually wear running pants in summer or fleece.

Worth every penny.

As long as it's your ass, not mine.

Just make sure your medical insurance premiums are paid up.

I ride with: jacket, helmet, gloves, leathers or reinforced jeans, and boots no matter the weather.

After riding downhill mountain bikes for 4 years.... riding without protection is just dumb.

So true, but look at the many riders out there who are just plain stupid, IQ wise. They might as well wear a sign saying "I'm a stupid squid". Thats what I think when I see someone riding around on a sport bike in a t shirt and shorts. Personally, i could care less what they wear and if they crash and grind their skin pass the bone and beyond, I laugh at them. The part that pisses me off are the ones who crash without medical insurance, that means dumbfk is costing the taxpayers a lot of money in order to fix whats left. Lots of pain associated with bad rash injuries, but the squids who get hurt are tough, or that is what they are trying to convey to others when wearing nothing.

Many here have offered a simple solution, mesh jacket over a t-shirt and jeans meant for riding. Not my normal outfit and I discovered eventually wearing perforated leathers without long johns as I used to is comfortable even in 100 + temps. As long as your moving or on the freeway its a piece of cake. The wind wicks away perspiration and thus keeps you cool. There are ways to keep cool and safe, ignoring these solutions is just a sign of stupidity or laziness.

I jumped in here partly because of a very close call I witnessed while entering the freeway the other day. I was just about finished merging into the slow lane from an on ramp when I noticed this dude coming up behind me at a pretty fast clip. He was also merging. Instead of just getting in behind me and then wait til there was an opening to move into the #3 lane, he decided to make his move before it was safe to do so. There was a car coming up in the #3 lane and numbnuts made his move when the other car was in his blindspot. He didn't turn his head to look, I clearly saw him look in his mirror only and it was pure luck the worst didn't happen. In the #2 lane was a motorcyclist on a sport bike going faster than all of us but not much faster than the speed limit. He apparently didn't notice the guy getting onto the freeway at a high rate of speed and showing every indication he was likely going to do something stupid. You know how it is, you can sense shit going down by actions or just a gut feeling. Instead of backing down to let the stuff happen in front of him, not paying attention to the above the motorcylist kept up his speed and found himself just to the left of the car that was in the #3 lane, the lane where the dude going fast wanted to be. So numbnuts makes his lane change in an abrubt manner and quickly realized there was a car there so he swerved back. The car he almost sideswiped swerved left to avoid him and into the lane occupied by the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist could only go one way and he made the same swerving movement into the unoccupied #1 lane. What saved his ass was the fact there wasn't a car in the lane, dumb luck. All of this happened in one to two seconds, that is why I knew how it went down eventhough it happened behind me.

The guy in the truck who almost caused the wreck eventually got into the #3 lane and drove down the highway like a saint, no longer in a hurry. You know how sometimes a close call like that will cause you to mello out afterwards? The motorcyclist continued on but clearly displaying body language like he was saying WTF?

So, for you invincible t-shirt and shorts riders, you never know when a lighting bolt is going to come out of the sky and take you out. At least with mesh and abbrasive proof jeans, coupled with some type of boot, you can slide around at 70-80mph after a get off and likely survive without the deep to the bone and beyond injuries. Thats assuming you don't tumble too much or make sudden stops or as one case I'm familiar with out of LA when the motorcyclist had both his legs cut off when he slid into a paddlemarker. You know those paddlemarkers with the circular reflector on them? Those things are killers. The rider who had his legs amputated by the marker survived only because a doctor was following and stopped to render aid. Blood lost was massive and death would have been swift, but the doctor curtailed the bleeding.

For those who are guilty of what we are talking about you will likely think about it years from now (when you grow up) and wonder why you did stupid things like that. I know because I've thought about the stupid stuff I used to do.

Its just a matter of time before it happens, at that time you will either be lucky or unlucky. But, there are ways to minimize the damage.

I wore a leather jacket in Florida

many Miami runs as a mc messenger in the summer, YDK hot/humid until you do that, now, many many years later, I got the mesh jacket....I'll ride without gear because of poverty, not out of choice.

That made my head hurt. If my brain explodes, it is yer fault the pooooor public will have to pay for it as I have no medical insurance.
