Junction closing?

The junction is open again, effective today 3/13 :thumbup

It's an awsome ride on a bike but did anyone ever drive it. I did in a 4x4 manual truck to retrieve a friends crashed bike and it wasn't all that much fun.

You know, I don't know that I've ever driven Mines. I've driven Mt Hamilton and Del Puerto since the days when there were unpaved sections, and I drive Corral Hollow when I visit friends in the valley, but I can't remember ever driving from Livermore to the Junction.

Have driven my 4x4 Tacoma up there on a few occasions... couple of times hauling gear up for a 1Rider event, and once hauling my trailer up there to pick up a rider who'd crashed, and needed to get hauled to South SF.
While hauling my trailer, I got stuck behind a Jeep Cherokee. I was right on his butt... finally passed him, and couldn't help but laugh when I saw the "Hardley Davidson" shield on the door... :laughing

"Organic interface error."

:p

I did the Mines, Del Puerto (in a rather "spirited" fashion) while piloting my Toyota Camry. DAMN, that's a fun road to drive in a car too! Although, my rear brakes shoulda been disc, the fronts can get hot, and soft compound tires woulda been nice, as well as maybe some harder bushings, a better suspension, etc......

Now, if only I coulda done it in a Mini Cooper 'S'!!!

It's a wonderful drive in a Honda S2000. Back when I used to own one, a group of six of us made that run. The group leader pulled off about two blocks before The Junction into a large driveway in front of a building on the other side of the road, because he didn't realize we were so close, and one of the guys in the back pulled off into the gravel going way too fast and bounced his car off of a tree there. I was watching him in my rearview mirror, wondering if he was going to bounce off of my car. Other than wedging some wood into the rear rim causing a flat tire, plus some dents behind the door, the car was still drivable. It wasn't much fun helping him limp the car over Mt. Hamilton with a space saver spare on the back.

I've enjoyed the trip in my current Mustang convertible, but at a nice slow pace enjoying the scenery.

Personally, I think my XR650L is the best bike for Mines Road. My ST2 works well enough, and I've never really enjoyed riding the 888 up there. That bike needs more open roads.

When I was laid up with an injury, a friend ran me up there with his car... had some suspension work done, good tires... it was a blast! More work making it fun in my truck... but I have to say my Gixxer loves Mines, and it's one of my favorite roads!

We did Mines, then up Mt Hamilton, with our Mr2 Spyder club. Just as much fun as the bike. We had 10 cars in our group. :thumbup

But those are country blocks, not city :teeth.

An S2000 would be a lot more fun than a 4x4. Too bad they can't make that place one way traffic only. It can get sketchy out there when you're riding head on into the Fast and the Furious Porsche (or any other auto) club.

When I'd get to Patterson I would take the Highway back just to avoid a head-on with the late stragglers coming in from Livermore.

The earlier you get started the less you'll be meeting returning traffic.:thumbup

So the Junction was open this weekend? Did anybody go? Reports on how the food/service was?

not to worry, the slide is still there.

passed by (on a SJ-to-Ceres run) today around 3pm, all gates were closed. didn't feel like walking all the way up to the building to check for a sign (that might reveal new operating hours, or grand opening date, etc.)

And I think someone mentioned it already, but wow, is the backside of Hamilton awful; there's a couple miles of gravel starting just east of the observatories. Yuk!

The parking lot was packed on Sunday with what appeared to be brisk business inside.

And yeah, back side of Mt. Ham is a mess. Towards the top it's closer to a loose dirt road than asphalt.

...Towards the top it's closer to a loose dirt road than asphalt.
I called it gravel, and that may be a bit misleading, it's sand and dirt and rocks (from the hillsides) that have washed across the road, leaving no clean line. And in general (from Mt. Ham to Patterson), there were a lot of fallen rocks encroaching on the roadway, as if there'd just been an earthquake. On the up side (no pun intended), some of the missing asphalt on the San Jose side has been replaced or filled in.

I made a road trip up there yesterday (Tuesday)..... on my Vespa GT200.

I had a cold Sierra Nevada (price increase on drinks), and a Buffalo Burger.

Said to have been purchased by a retired couple up there not relying on it for day-to-day income. News is that 'Jerry' after whom the "Jerry Burger" was named has passed on this last week....

I just did the Del Peurto run and Mines to Livermore.... than the backroads over the Altamont home to Stockton. Interesting to have taken a sub 20hp sub-200cc machine on a ride I normally take a 115hp Suzuki...... (my back is still killing me)
