So yesterday I donned my leathers, slapped on my knee sliders and went out for a nice ride. I decided to swing by one of my favorite turns (shoulda taken a pic) up the hill. Since it was quiet time up in the mountains at this time I had the road to myself and decided to have a little practice session. I did several laps through this turn...going through it, then turning around at the turnout and doing again the other way. I was attempting to get pretty quick on this turn and was trying to put down my kneepuck. No luck.

The turn: it's a 30mph sweeper, slightly banked. I was hitting 60-70mph through it on my 06 R6. I did my technique properly, I think. I get my ass crack over the edge of the seat, open point my body in the direction of the turn with my leg jammed out as far and hard as possible, leaning over the tank and looking to the end of the turn. Despite several attempts, I was not able to get my knee to touchdown even once! I was pretty depressed.

Any thoughts on what I did wrong? and any suggestions on how to improve?

Please don't go off how I shouldn't be speeding and trying this on public roads. I can't afford trackdays and live too far from a track anyhow. lol Plus it's a quiet road with no one on it, and when there was someone there I slowed down until they were gone.

you weren't leaning enough.

go faster

I suspect a crash analysis post shortly

you weren't leaning enough.

go faster

at the track though

That's what i'm thinking. I feel like i'm leaning far over enough, but I guess not. I would like to go faster at the track. I just see people drag knee on the street and wonder how they do it? I sure as hell can't! Maybe it's because of the banking?

no, its because they are leaning more. Are you sure your knee is actually swung out?

Pretty sure. I practiced the motion after watching an MCN video and sitting on the bike at a stand still. Then I shoved the knee as far out as possible in the turn just like in the vids. Then try a little harder...still no dice. lol

Thats because hes at the track doing 75-80mph

The faster you go, the more you lean, the more likely your knee will touch down

Exactly...I was just hoping I could do it without having to get too crazy on the street. I don't want to push my limits too much. I've put a bike down once on a off-camber turn.

you can drag knee in a parking lot (ya rly)

you just need to lean more in a tighter turn

I have some used up pucks I can send you. Ppl won't know it wasnt you

What's that mean?

<---you make it look easy haha

That's turn 2 at Thunderhill. Early afternoon, and I'd been spending all day taking that turn at speed every 2 1/2 minutes or so. A little faster each time around. In a safe environment, on a clean, predictable surface, with literally miles of runoff in case anything went wrong.

And yeah, once you've done it....it's easy. :cool

Take it to the track. If you have an almost new R6, but no money for trackdays, you may want to rethink your priorities. Good to hear that you're geared up, at least. :thumbup

Ya, and I see that. On the MCN video, they were draggin knee on a roundabout doing under 40mph by the look of it. I guess I just don't have the courage to go down that far...at least not since I laid down a bike a while ago. I just don't know the limit and don't want to overshoot it. I do have a nice suspension setup and race tires...heated up of course. IDK what to do.

I was supposed to go many times, just finances go in the way, then I didn't want to go alone, but my boss wrecked his bike so he doesn't go anymore. Now i'm unemployed and really can't afford. I really want to do it though. I bought the suit, the boots, and all the gear I need to do it, just didn't have any money left to actually go.

I do love my bike though and I like just cruising it around...believe that or not, but I really want to be able to go fast on it to at the track and use its full potential.

your tires suck, you should get some slicks or race DOTs. An be sure to use tire warmers before you head out to the mountains and lean real hard with your knee out.

I have Michelin Pilot race tires, I spent about an hour hitting mountain twisties hard to get some heat in them. I think it's the combination of me not knowing how far I can push the bike and (maybe the camber of the turn?)

I live in the mountains by the way.
