Knee drag frustrations....

I have Michelin Pilot race tires, I spent about an hour hitting mountain twisties hard to get some heat in them. I think it's the combination of me not knowing how far I can push the bike and (maybe the camber of the turn?)

I live in the mountains by the way.

You might have the street version? That an I believe race tires have a hard time warming up when not run hard.

But anyways, I'd say save your dollars for a trackday:| You will learn much more during a day at the track then riding twisties.

IMO draggin knee does not mean shyt!

Also my dumbass crashed on the street because I was trying to be cool and dragg knee on the street. But its all good now I managed to surive my short lived street days and enjoy my bike on the track only.:party
 
FWIW, I've always thought that there are body positions to drag knee, and body positions to go fast, so it's not impossible to drag knee on the street if you adopt the latter. Hell I've seen guys do it. I don't know how they do it, but I've never really cared for dragging knee on the streets, so can't help you out there.

That's another great part of the track. There are photographer and you can scope the pics. First sessions out, laying down blazing 2:45s you are gonna think you are really leaning the shit out of the bike and your head is just a few inches from the ground

Then you look at the pictures and you are damn near upright

It took me a handful of track days to get my knee down
 
Oh, and +1 on knee dragging doesn't mean much. A lot depends on your bike height, your leg length, body position, etc. I've followed tall lanky guys who could drag knee all over the place, and never even got close until I went out to the track.

I didn't really want to drag knee to be cool. I wanted to do, just so that I can do it. Everyone makes it look easy. lol But they are the DOT race version. The guy I bought the bike from is an AMA racer and this was his spare. He gave me all the stock parts and reverted it back to stock...except for keeping the nice suspension! :teeth I know I warmed them up. I think I just don't have the courage to do this on the street.

That's what I was thinking and I think I have the position down...I just did what they said to do in the video to drag knee. The MCN video showed the guys practicing on the street to. :shocker

Ya, I can see that. I'm not too tall. Just 5'11" and my bike is moderately sized to. lol

meh..if you are 5'11 its prob pretty easy..the 06+ R6 has really low clip ons. I'm only an inch or two away :laughing

There isn't any real trick to dragging a knee. Yes, it's possible to stick a knee out, assume an extremely awkward position, and force it down... But I suspect that isn't what you are going for.

Keep in mind that the more heavily banked a corner is, the further the pavement is going to be from your knee. For a nicely banked turn, you'd have to ride incredibly fast and lean it over pretty far to get the knee down. However, I'd advise against looking for an off-camber turn -- off-camber turns tend to encourage sliding tires.

Personally, I think knee dragging on the street is a little like unprotected sex with strangers. Yes, it's exciting, but you're taking huge risks -- especially if you have poor judgment about these kinds of things.

You're good at hitting the nail right on the head. lol Ya, the turn was banked. Nice turn, but I can't get myself to push myself too far on the street and possibly get hurt. I just wanted to see if I could do it. I really want to get to a trackday and learn how to really use my bike's potential. It's just not financially feasible right now...plus I was bored yesterday. lol :party
 
That's turn 2 at Thunderhill. Early afternoon, and I'd been spending all day taking that turn at speed every 2 1/2 minutes or so. A little faster each time around. In a safe environment, on a clean, predictable surface, with literally miles of runoff in case anything went wrong.

I think turn two is one of the dirtier corners at thill. People tend to stick to an inside line, which throws snot-balls at the outside edge of the corner. I'm sure it's fine if you stick to the inside, but I'd rather not run wide there.

When I was learning, turn 5 was actually one of the first places it touched down. :laughing
