Knee dragging is NOT sexy.....

IT IS SEXY!

Later you slow pokes. :laughing
It's even faster / sexier if you stop looking at your speedometer in turns :)

Guess you havent ridden BW yet:laughing :laughing
That's the first thing I said when I rode Buttonwillow.

"Fuck, if I wanted to ride on something this narrow I would have stayed on Highway 9!"

uhhhh... that would be me. Faster (smoother) than I ever was NOW, and touch down a lot less if ever (on the street). Good point TrackHo... I'm totally experiencing what you said these days... :thumbup
My street corner speed is probably the same, or half a notch down from the "Highway 9" days in the mid 90s. Straightaway speed is considerably slower.

When they first head to the track, many street riders initially sort of waddle around midcorner, dragging their knee to their hearts content. When they eventually get a little faster, they're spending less time in the corner, and less time at full lean.

The safest line through a corner typically uses the least lean angle possible. Naturally, many new track riders love the lean angle. As they get faster and develop better lines, many riders actually drag less.

When track riders return to the street and drag less, I think as much of it has to do with safer, better lines through corners learned from the racetrack. I dragged everywhere on the street in the early / mid 90s. These days, rarely.

Then again, these days I tend to spend my weekends mountain biking :)

I don't drag knee on the street, I don't do big wheelies either,
but I admire those who have the skills to do it safely.
If I had the skills I would do it too.
I'm a highly skilled motocrosser and moutain biker, and when I'm out riding, people think I'm some out of control lunatic because I'm going so much faster than them.....the fact is , I'm actually in MORE control of my bike than they are!
On the other side of the fence though......last year, I read an interview with Collin Edwards, who was talking about a street ride he had done with Mat LeBlanc and some friends (no pun intended:teeth ) down in southern ca.......Collin said he was soo scared he could barely keep up with the group. (all he saw was gaurd rails, and trees!) .
I think when we ride the street alot, we get used to the dangers and maybe become complacent ....it's a dangerous place to play, let's all be carefull, but don't forget why most of us ride bikes in the first place.......TO HAVE FUN !;)

knee pucks

I have knee pucks on my leathers.. I dont think i have hit the ground with them yet.... maybe i should do a track day to scuff them up a bit. Im not riding like a banshee in the street to do it.

Depends how you like to ride, really, as well as how fast you ride. I hang off all the time when I ride through the twisties, just instinctively, though not as much as I would on a race track. Most of the time I don't "have" to for traction reasons, but it feels natural to me - in fact I really have to make a special effort to sit my butt in the seat and not hang off and lean into the turns, since it feels really strange to me. In your case, you might not have scraped metal so much if you had hung off the inside a bit.

Agree, I do not try to drag my knee all the time anymore, I am to old (note not wise) for that crap. Although through PIR and the teachers that I had when I was up there, they wanted to see us off the side on every turn. It was not to drag the knee but to get use to leaning on the track with us hanging off. I took the class twice, about 2 years apart from each other and have leaned and shifted ever since. I put my leg out a bit, but do not try it on the road much anymore. If it happens it happens, and I know I was going a bit hot into the corner. Hell my first trip on Mines my leaning the way I usualy do saved my ass. My left puck has a big chunck out of it from where I almost lowsided. God, I love that road

I do disagree with the toe thing though. I put my toes out quite a bit more than my knees. If I am pushing it a bit then I kinda use them as feelers, I always have. Just how I was taught I guess. I did not always like it, but it has grown on me.

Edit: Man, my spelling sucks.

+1 on trying to get your knee down on the street might not be the brightest idea..It might make someone panic when their knee first touches ground on the street and could be fatal..Thunderhill would be the best track (well at least from my perspective) to get the "feel" of your knee dragging..I have to admit, i do look at the bikes tires and knee pucks to gauge the riders ability..My bad..

:eek

My 2 cents: You don't want to look like the squid in the Progressive commercial, coming around a 'corner' knee out, bike VERTICAL! WTF is that all about?

Dragging knee has nothing to do with going fast. My knee touches the ground with 2-3mm left to go on the rear tire. Then when my knee digs into the ground i'm using the whole rear tire.

Ever since i started dragging knee, it feels unsafe to take corners without doing so. The whole point of putting your knee on the ground is a reassurance of your lean angle. It's not to look cool or to show everyone that you're a racer. There are people out there that ride WAAAYY too fast for the mountains IMO, and they dont drag knee. So all this knee draggin talk is nonsense mmkay?

Dragging knee feels safer, and helped me find at least a few more degrees of lean angle on my right hand turns that were decieving before. If you havent dragged knee before, dont try to stick your knee out. It's all about your body position. If it happens it happens. If you try too hard you may eat concrete. It took me 15k miles of riding to figure it out. Some ppl take way less time. Some ppl never do it.

I ride like they did in the 60's, knees tight against the tank. That way when I go by a cop in a turn... I LOOK SLOWER than I really am!

So does anyone know where I can get some pucks to wear with my shorts. I am looking for something that will match my wife beater when I out stunting.

Do you need ones with straps or were you just going to velcro them to your leg-hair? I found that kinda pulls, especially if you hit a raised reflector. Hasn't actually pulled any hairs out yet, just really yanks on them.

Resurection.... :thumbup

Before the days of Mojo..... and when V4 really cared...:laughing
