Knee dragging is NOT sexy.....

Willis,

What are you trying to say? Don't beat around the bush....just come out and say it.

Scott

Everybody that posts about squidliness eventually gets a post admonishing said squidliness. From you. If you had a standard "lets take it to the track" post ready to paste.....you could save some time.

While they seem a little abrasive, I agree with alot of your posts.

I did a Wendy Mines ride a few weeks ago. B group. I hung, barely, with Wendy. Pace was BRISK. I was dragging the center stand and the right peg feeler regularly. Scrape on the right pipe below the frame, too. Not once did I see Wendy or any rider in front of her hang off. So at the Junction asked how come. No need to.

Yet a great many riders I've ridden with over the past several months in the Santa Cruz mountains hang off where it is clearly unnecessary. Claim is the bike is more upright and therefore more stable or better grip.

In many cases I have observed them upsetting the bike as they "get off" before or at the lean in point.

I can't say I really hang off, but at least scooting over a bit actually makes for a better feel-- one theory I've heard surmises that it keeps the line between center of gravity and contact patch roughly parallel to the fork and shocks, which allows for less stiction. Maybe its a load of crap... who cares. :laughing

Of course, if you're scraping lots of hard parts like I would do on my cruiser, maybe you're the one who needs to start hanging off :teeth

:thumbup exactly

I usually tell myself, "If I have to hang off, I'm going too fast" to keep myself alive. Just my .02.

It's not the speed that kills ya, it's the hazards you can potentially encounter at full lean in the middle of a turn...

Hanging off was started by the BMW factory racers.

ABANDON THREAD!

Please, that is a weak statement.

The street is not the place to try and drag a knee. Can I do it? Sure, anytime I feel like it. Do I? Never. Why? Because you have to ride harder than is safe.

The bottomline is that riding hard to drag your knee on the street is riding too hard for the street. Save it for the track. Let's all ride safely on the street so we don't have to read about more avoidable accidents and deaths.

Scott

As in all things, there is a time and place. Going fast enough on public roads to drag knee needs to be taken seriously, no doubt, but absolute statements like what I hear here, sorry, I don't agree. With experience, skill, the right well known road, bike, etc, it can be done year after year safely, but as always, when you approach your envelope, better use your head, and your knee (perhaps). Yes if you are an inexperienced squid who only wants to show off then the above applies. If you aren't comfortable around others doing it, just take another road. :angel

That's not the main reason...just one of the reasons.

The main reason is keeping more tire on the ground which does allow us to acheive greater corner speeds.

On some bikes bikes you need to hang off to keep hard parts off the ground.

Scott

P.S. Does this make you a "Pocket Rider"? ;)

I SAID "CONTACT PATCHES BEING EQUAL" ASS-HO!!!! ;) :twofinger

Was that the same guy that got all pissy because Jaehne overtook him while riding his wife's 250? It was like handbags at 20 paces with him and Gary, quite funny. I think Gary was just minding his own business and passed him, then the guy got all pissy and started trying to race him and Gary never even noticed, lol!

Frankly, if I'd had my ass handed back to me by some guy on a Ninja 250, I'd keep my mouth shut. The best part was when he said 'I've done track days, I'll see YOU at the track' Bwahahaha!

:laughing Gary's the man!

First time i dragged knee was on my ninja 250. Didn't have any pucks on :p And yes it was on the street (H-9) On that last corner in the patrick S' (when you're going downhill) I skimmed my toe then the knee followed. I never really thought about body position much. But, that particular day I thought i'd work on it a bit. Dropping my upper body is what helped me get my knee down for the first time. I admit, it did feel good :p But, not worth crashing over!

I don't think it's worth obsessing over so much, especially on the street. Work on being smooth, and having the correct body position rather than the- both cheeks off the seat, upper body straight position:loser . V4 gives good advice :thumbup last place you want to try to get knee down is on the street (yes, i'm a hypocritical bastard:twofinger )

We have GOT to find out who this was... I'll bet they read this board, too. All of the really really really fast guys do. :thumbup

C'mon out now, don't be shy... That "Ninja 250" is really a re-badged ZX-12... Honest. Come on out and tell us your side of the story.

Handbags at Twenty Yards... love it!! :laughing

Ut oh.. wait.. was the guy riding a yellow 748 with the oil light on?

Nevermind then.

The last time I was at the track, I kept my speed about the same all the way around (no WOT on the straights, barely used the brakes the whole day) so people could pass with no prob. and they were passing me left and right, I was slow as shit. but, I was having a blast hanging off learning to drag knee, and thats all I cared to do that day, not go fast or chase people.

I cant believe some people think you have to be going super fast to drag knee. Dragging actually makes you slower unless you really know what you're doing, cause it takes some concentration away from the turn (for me at least).

I strongly agree the place to try this is the track, people trying it on the street in traffic for the first time are gonna get hurt.

Not to mention the crossed-up spastic style--ie gotta get my knee on the ground No matter what...... that most street draggers tend to develop....seems that it takes a long time for some "street racers" to unlearn this---and learn body postioning that actually helps them go faster/safer

uhhhh... that would be me. Faster (smoother) than I ever was NOW, and touch down a lot less if ever (on the street). Good point TrackHo... I'm totally experiencing what you said these days... :thumbup

I wore my leathers while riding up to 92 yesterday, I tried to drag my knee on this turn that I know very well. The funny thing is that I broke so much before the turn that I was going the suggested speed limit when I finally got there. :rolleyes Riding a lot at the track will do that to you, you just don't feel safe anywhere on the street.

Everytime I go out in the twisties after being on the track I think to myself "Holy shit these lanes are sooooo narrow." There's really no point trying to ride fast on public roads, it just ain't the same.
